Latest buzz on Moreau, others

He's not going to LSU, which means it's almost certain he will sign with Tulane tomorrow.

Keep this to yourselves because the source he told this to (not me) has not been freed to release the information. LSU offensive coordinator Cam Cameron offered him a scholarship before he committed there the first time, but Les Miles had not authorized Cameron to offer the scholarship and some other LSU coaches were hopping mad. That explains why he committed--it seemed fishy that a player would jump the gun before he was actually offered. LSU then came back with an offer for him to grayshirt or be a preferred walk-on but refused to offer him a scholarship for this class.

That was not good enough for Moreau. He did not say he was going to Tulane, but the Wave has been his clear No. 2 choice and he liked his official visit.

If Moreau joins the fold, Tulane will have hit on two of the three guys it needed at the end while still waiting for word from Hunter Dale.

Tulane targets for Signing Day

Nothing new to report, but here are the guys Tulane is targeting. With Louis Wings likely not part of the class due to academic concerns, they have room for three more if necessary.

1) Foster Moreau, TE, Jesuit

Rating: 2 stars (5.4)

The skinny: He really wants to go to LSU, but LSU does not have room for him. At a basketball game between Jesuit and St. Aug this weekend, St. Aug fans started chanting "LSU don't want you" at Moreau, and a reporter at the game tweeted that LSU TE commit Jamal Pettigrew of St. Aug was leading the chant. The tweet was deleted later. Moreau visited Tulane three weekends ago and also is considering Mississippi State.

Prediction: He wises up and chooses Tulane.

2) Hunter Dale, safety, John Curtis

Rating: 3 stars (5.7)

The skinny: After receiving numerous scholarship offers from power five schools, Dale did not have as good a senior year as expected, so some of them cooled off on him. Still, he is rated higher by Rivals.com than any of Tulane's commitments and would continue the pipeline CJ and company have established from John Curtis. He visited two weekends ago and roomed with punter Zach Block, who committed the following day. Block told me Dale enjoyed his visit, but he said he did know whether he would sign with Tulane. I have had no contact with Dale, who has indicated he will make a decision on Signing Day at the earliest.

Prediction: I have my doubts, but Dale is hard to read. It is also hard to read what power five schools are still interested in him.

3) Darius Williams, WR, McDonogh

Rating: 3 stars (5.5)

The skinny: Williams visited in the second-to-last weekend along with Block and Dale. Some have indicated he is a silent commitment, and since Tulane did not bring a wide receiver in this past weekend at a position where it has a desperate need, it sure seems like they feel like they have Williams.

Prediction: Williams makes it official on Signing Day with his signature.

4) Trey Robinson, CB, Chandler (Ariz.) Hamilton High

Rating: zero stars

The skinny: Your guess is as good as mine why Tulane would recruit another DB when half the class already is made up of DBs, but he would not have come in if the Wave weren't interested in him. Is he a backup plan if no else commits this week? Is he a sleeper whose reputed 4.49 speed in the 40 and tiny size make him an overlooked big-timer like Nico Marley? I have no idea.

Prediction: ?

Tulane needs to have attrition between now and next February

The only seniors will be Monroe, Carthon, Picerelli, LaFrance, Bradley, Uzdavinis, Jacquet and London.

That's eight guys. Tulane should be no more than one scholarship short of the maximum 85 scholarships entering next fall and would need to part ways with about nine guys between now and next February to bring in a class of 18.

The number situation is a little scary. It's hard to just run off players at Tulane.

Kendall Bussey

Former Tulane commit and former Nebraska commit, Kendall Bussey, just announced through his father that he is now a former Tennessee commit. As of now, he's committed to Texas A&M. How many more changes can he make in the next 48 hours? Someone should get a dictionary to that family and highlight the word "commit."

Confirmed: official visitors this past weekend

Again, I apologize for not having this last week.

Two players visited--Leeward Brown, who committed yesterday, and Tommie (Trey) Robinson from Chandler (Ariz.) Hamilton High, a 5-foot-8, 149-pound cornerback who is the Rivals database but does not have any stars and does not have a listed D1 offer. He comes from the same high school as Calvin Thomas.

He did not start until his senior year, which is one of the two reasons (along with his size) that he really under the radar. His father is the running backs coach at Texas. He also is young, having turned 17 during his senior year. His team went 12-2 last year, losing twice to national power Chandler High (that must be a heck of town for high school football), including in the state championship game. Their closest victory came against Mike Lizanich's school, Centennial, but now I'm getting into meaningless trivia.

I believe no one else took an official visit.

Here's a link where Robinson was named the No. 9 prospect at a camp. Rivals also has a feature on him from before his senior year.

Watching Tape during the "Dead Period"

As we enter the recruiting dead period, I thought I'd review the highlights of our purported commitments. I wrote down my observations (opinions) and thought I'd share. For what they're worth:

Keeyon Smart[/B]-- Smart's highlights look good, no doubt. But… In over 60 plays, all at left tackle, only one was a pass play in which he didn't have to block any one. He only "pulled" on one running play in the entire set and looked slow. He showed well as a "drive blocker" against undersized players on all the rest. If he hasn't gotten much practice pass blocking, my guess is he'll redshirt this season. (http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1944260/keeyon-smart)

Leeward Brown[/B]- Brown's tape shows him primarily as a left guard though he plays right tackle on a few plays. He appears to be equally adept at pass blocking and run blocking and he manhandles smaller defensive linemen. He shows very well pulling on running plays but looks like he needs to shed 20-30 pounds minimum. He could see some playing time this year if he comes to camp in shape. (http://www.hudl.com/athlete/967476/leeward-brown)

Keyshawn McLeod[/B]- At 6'5" and 245#, McLeod looks slender. He could probably put on 30# without a problem. Whether he can put on 50#+ to play offensive tackle is another question. On his highlights, he plays left tackle and has good movement and does a great job blocking downfield. I'm wondering if he could be a blocking tight end or even a defensive end, which he apparently also played in high school but is not shown on his highlights. (http://www.hudl.com/athlete/2612409/keyshawn-mcleod)

Nigel Anderson[/B]- Anderson will be a good all-purpose back for Tulane in time. I don't see him playing much this year, however, with what we have returning. He shows good, but not great, speed on his tapes. He follows blockers and shows good power when confronted. He played QB a lot and showed some nice touch throwing left handed. At some point in his Tulane career, he'll throw a half-back pass for a TD. (http://www.hudl.com/athlete/3190607/nigel-anderson)

Devin Glenn[/B]- This is one quick and shifty guy. HUDL claims he runs a 4.3 40. True or not, he's fast and could be the Sproles-type that CJ has been looking for, though he's not shown catching any passes or returning kicks. Nonetheless, an impressive tape: he runs away from everyone. As an aside, he's a tough little corner back also. Hard to say what he could do on the field this year. (http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1518527/highlights/85390376)

Andrew Hicks[/B]- Hicks' highlights show him mostly as a running QB and he's a powerful runner, no doubt. It also shows him in eight plays as a receiver generally taking short wide-open throws without having to run much of a route. Hard to say how quickly he will adjust to the WR position in college. But, it's clear he will be very difficult for defensive backs to bring down once he catches a ball. He's a likely redshirt in my opinion. (http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1530860/highlights/186140381)

John Washington[/B]- I haven't seen any tape of Washington as a senior and only one relatively short highlight reel of him as a junior. In it, he plays tackle in a 4-3 and defensive end in a 3-4. He doesn't look to have the speed to play outside and seemed a bit inconsistent shedding blockers on the inside. He's a strong guy and plays in the opponent's backfield a great deal. More of a run stopper than pass rusher, I think he could vie for playing time this year, with only two experienced guys back at DT. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RO4YEWs3SI)

Brian Webb[/B]- Here's another guy who I've only seen as a junior on highlights. But he looks very explosive and, for his size, pretty agile. He's got a chance to play this year. (http://www.hudl.com/athlete/2202416/highlights/67351376)

Louis Wings-[/B] Lots of rumors about his possible de-commitment, but Wings looks good on his highlight reel. He plays DT in a 4-3 and DE in a 3-4. Despite his size, he looks pretty quick at that DE position in the 3-4 and has a quick burst from the inside position as well. (http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1854319/highlights/199904375)

Tayris Shennal[/B]- On his tape, Shennal looks really good as a cover corner with the size and ball skills necessary to make plays. He also looks good as a return man and in his ten or so plays as a wide receiver. Corner looks like his best position to me, however. Because of his size he could get some early playing time in a VERY crowded defensive backfield. (http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1708489/taris-shenall)

Jeremy Francis[/B]- Francis does not appear to have elite speed but he hits someone on every play. According to HUDL, he's a 4.56 guy in the 40 but bench presses 365#. If that's true, he could be the strongest cornerback we've ever had at Tulane. I'd think he has a chance to play special teams fairly early but I don't see him stepping into the DB rotation any time soon. (http://www.hudl.com/athlete/2810086/highlights/82653379)

Chaz Key-[/B] The only highlights I've seen of Key are from his sophomore and junior season in which he played running back primarily, though there are a few plays of him as a safety. He appears to be a very good athlete with good speed and good "change of direction." It's hard to judge him, however, as a DB based on the limited tape. (http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1108434/chaz-key)

Doug Henry[/B]- Not a lot of tape on Henry as a DB. He's pretty good sized, about the same as Shennal, and that's good. Nonetheless, in a crowded backfield I think he's likely to "redshirt." He could also move over to WR, I suppose. (http://www.hudl.com/athlete/3445040/highlights/114361375)

Darius Black[/B]- I've only seen junior year highlights for Black, but in them he comes off as a very hard-nosed football player who can hit. As a junior he appeared to split time at free safety and corner and, more than a "ball hawk," he comes off as a punishing tackler, especially on plays across the middle when he's at safety. He seemed to have very good coverage skills on special teams which might be where he starts out. (http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=darius+black+hudl&FORM=VIRE4#view=detail&mid=A3EE3909B112F1BE0B42A3EE3909B112F1BE0B42)

Malik Eugene[/B]- On his highlights, Eugene is featured more at running back and as a returner. In both roles he appears to be the fastest man on the field though he doesn't (really doesn't have to) show much elusiveness. He just runs to an opening. He's a good cover man on kicks and punts, also. In the ten or so plays I saw with him on defense, he appeared to be playing more of a linebacker or "nickle" position and, in pass coverage, he usually took a slot receiver or running back. He looked good in every role so it's hard for me not to see him taking the field in some capacity this year. (http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1409603/highlights/199469386)

Dedrick Shy[/B]- Shy is yet another good size defensive back who has the opportunity to see early playing time. On tape, Shy looks aggressive as a cover corner with some "ball hawking" skills, probably gained from his time as a wide receiver, which still could be his ultimate position. But, he looks very good at corner. (http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1518515/highlights/210245381)

Roderick Teamer[/B]-I probably like his highlights better than any of our recruits. I see that some of our fans have him "penciled in" as a LB, and maybe that's what's "in the cards," but I really like him at strong safety. Look at his highlights, he covers, he runs to the ball, and he tackles as well as anyone. I think he may play a lot this season. (http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1832630/rod-teamer)

Zach Block[/B]- I've commented on a previous thread regarding Block's highlight reel; I wasn't that impressed. The good news is that in his December and January workouts at Kohl's kicking camps, he apparently "wowed" everyone. We don't need him to come in here and simply compete for a job; he needs to take one. With Picerelli graduating this year, he needs, at a minimum, to be our punter by 2016. If not, we'll need to sign another one in our tiny recruiting class next year. And, obviously, unless DiRocco improves, he has a chance at that job also. (http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1446855/zach-block)

Anyhow, we should see more highlights on signing day courtesy of the athletic office. I'm looking forward to them.

Temple Basketball Game

Our basketball team is improved this year. No doubt in my mind! Currently, we have four more wins than I predicted at this time, and clearly have a great shot at a winning season (16-14 is my current guess). Moreover, I predicted five wins in conference and we're already at four. And while the conference is not as strong as I originally thought, I think we have a great chance to finish 7-9, maybe better. But recent play has been disappointing and Coach Conroy still makes statements that leave me perplexed. After today's loss to Temple he said, "for whatever reason we were not ready to start this basketball game from a defensive standpoint."

Huh?!? OK, he goes on to explain that poor defense in the first five minutes caused us to force the ball on offense. But, really!! We were 3 for 24 from the floor in the first half. We committed nine turnovers and scored 8 points. Eight points!! NO STARTER SCORED IN THE ENTIRE FIRST HALF. And defense was the problem? Heck, Temple only scored 28. And, they only shot 43.8% from the floor. It was not like our defense let them run wild.

And, yes, I understand that Temple went 5 for 6 in the first 4½ minutes. But we went 0 for 6, so we were not ready to start this basketball game from an offensive standpoint either. Regardless, that put us down 12-0. And 12 points is a lot in the first five minutes. That's a rate of 96 points in a full game. But Zero points is a rate of zero points in a complete game. Focusing on defensive shortcomings seems to fail to recognize the problems we had on offense.

To me, our problem was OFFENSE, Coach-- whatever the pressures, whatever the circumstance. We should win games when we allow 57 points. But our team is averaging less than 50 points a game in our last four contests. That simply won't cut it.

Roll Wave!!!

Official visitors: weekend of Jan. 23

Nine visitors, but six are already commitments

The three who aren't commitments:

1) Darius Williams, WR, McDonogh 35, 6-2, 171 pounds, 2 stars according to Rivals.com

The skinny: Tulane really needs a wide receiver. Williams' only other offer according to Rivals.com is Temple, which beat Tulane on the field in December and in the last recruiting season took away 3-star Florida DT commitment Freddie Booth-Lloyd from the Wave (he did not play this year and was redshirted). Tulane linebacker Rene Fleury and offensive tackle Kenneth Santa Marina are from McDonogh 35.

Williams is an excellent athlete with good jumping ability who needs to improve his consistency. Dandy Don's listed him as the No. 73 prospect in Louisiana, for what that's worth.

2) Zachary Block, punter from East Ridge High School in Clermont, Fla.

The skinny: After Bennett Moehring committed to Navy yesterday, Tulane is bringing another punter/kicker. He was rated slightly below Moehring on Kohl's but has a very strong leg and is seen as a guy who can be an excellent punter in college. He is not in the Rivals.com database.

3) Hunter Dale, Safety, John Curtis, 5-11, 200, 3 stars

The skinny: This is not a big need, but Dale would be too good to pass up. Rivals ranks him the No. 21 prospect in Louisiana and he has had offers from more than 20 schools, including Oregon, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Tennessee and Penn State. In December he listed his top six as Miami, Florida, Arizona, Arizona State, Notre Dame and Ole Miss. Tulane has plied its John Curtis connection heavily under CJ but has not gotten a commitment from the school yet this year. Dale would be the highest rated recruit in the class if he committed.

Dale supposedly committed to Nebraska last July but then said he had not, and with the coaching changer there, it doesn't matter anyway.

The other official visitors are previous commitments Devin Glenn, Jeremie Francis, Douglas Henry, Roderick Teamer, Dedrick Shy and Nigel Anderson.

One week to signing day

One week to signing day.

Will we finish with a flourish or go out with a whimper? We're apparently widening our search for a wide receiver and offering guys who have no other offers, even at this late date. I only hope, in our desperation, we don't take guys who will barely see the field for four years and simply clog the roster. This week's visitors list will probably tell a lot. We go back into a "dead period" starting Monday.

Louis Wings has now become an interesting question. Has he de-committed? If so, was it before or after we got the commitment from John Washington. Was there a causal relationship? In other words, did Wings de-commit and we went after Washington, or, did Washington commit, and Wings decided to go elsewhere? In the end it really doesn't matter. Hopefully, neither is the case and Wings is still a commitment. A third DT isn't our biggest recruiting need, but all seem to be good players with a potential to make significant contributions.

Hoping for the best; Roll Wave!!!

Thoughts on tonight's game against Tulsa

Tulane is right where it should be at 4-4 in the AAC after missing a huge opportunity against Memphis at the Smoothie King Center, forcing the Green Wave to beat league-leading Tulsa to avoid going 0-3 in its home stretch.

Tulane won two games comfortably--at Memphis and East Carolina--and lost two games fair and square--Temple and SMU at home. The other four games could have gone either way, and the Wave made enough plays down the stretch to beat Houston and USF and not enough plays to beat UCF and Memphis.

Beating Tulsa will be difficult. Although the Wave matches up better with the Golden Hurricane than SMU, Tulsa has won 18 consecutive conference games dating back to midseason in Conference USA last year, taking their last eight regular-season games, three games in the CUSA tourney and the first seven this season. Tulsa's quickness wears opponents down as much as other teams' size, although it struggled at doormat East Carolina over the weekend, winning by two points.

Tulsa guards Shaq Harrison and James Woodard may be the two best players in the AAC, and it is hard to see how Tulane will be able to contain their penetration for 40 minutes. Quite simply, Tulsa probably will have easier ways to score than the Wave but that's why they play the games, and this Tulane team clearly is capable of competing with almost anyone in the league, something that could not be said in the past even in weaker Conference USA.

My guess is Tulane's chances for a high finish in the AAC went out the window in the loss to Memphis, when the Wave simply did not play well enough for most of the game to deserve to win even thought it had a terrific chance in the last minute. The schedule is too tough in the next month and Tulane simply doesn't have enough scoring options unless someone rises up (see front page Q&A with Keith Pinckney). There's too much pressure on Lou Dabney, Jonathan Stark and Jay Hook to manufacture all the points.

If the Wave wins tonight, the second half of the conference schedule could get very interesting.

If the Wave loses tonight, it will be interesting to see how the team holds together. This has been the toughest, most resilient group in Conroy's tenure, but the inability to put the ball in the basket for long stretches will frustrate any team.

J.P. France Q&A

I caught up with J.P. France yesterday before Tulane's baseball practice. He endured a rough freshman year, finishing with an ERA of 5.91 while giving up 40 hits in 35 innings, and he is recovering from an elbow injury.

Here's what he said:

How has the rehabilitation process gone?

"It's been a long rehab. It's gone on four or five months now, but I'm three bullpens in and I'm going to get in out here today. It's feeling better, and I should be ready for the season."

What exactly was the issue?

"It was an elbow. It ended up being something with the nerve."

How frustrating was it?

"It was definitely frustrating. It happened during the summer. When I felt something wasn't right, it was kind of aggravating because I knew it was come into the season. When I was up in Bethesda (Md. for summer ball) it was aggravating me a little bit but nothing to complain about until a couple of months ago."

How healthy are you now?

The last pen I threw, it was about 90 percent. It felt good. We'll see how it feels today when I throw."

Will you be fine by the start of the season?

"I should be. I'm hoping to throw an inning today, and if it feels good, I'll come back and throw another couple of innings whenever they want me to and then hopefully be ready by the season."

What are your individual goals?

"Making the conference tournament (actually all eight teams in the AAC will play in the tourney). And then just like every year, making a regionals, a super regionals and then Omaha. We have new coaches. The coaches are great this year, everybody loves them. They brought a whole new energy to the club. The energy level just is completely different than what it was last year."

How rough was last year for the entire team

"We had a young club. There were a lot of learning experiences, but we definitely are learning a lot this year and we are a looking a lot better this year."

David Pierce has been to a regional in his last 14 years as a college coach, and he has let you guys know that. Does that put pressure on you or does it just boost your confidence because you know he has what it takes to be successful?

"It's definitely putting a lot of pressure on us because we have a lot to live up to with what he's done in the past coaching, but also the confidence is just through the roof right now with this team."

What are your thoughts on the new, livelier balls?

"I haven't really been able to throw with them yet in a live game to see, but it looks like it's working better for both. The pitchers, it's giving them a little more V, a little more late action, and on the flip side for the hitters it's making the ball travel more, so that's kind of depressing for a pitcher."

What does this team need to do this year to be successful?

"The improvement we've had from last year is just unbelievable, so if we just stay on the same track we are right now I feel like we have a really good chance of making conference and regionals."

Proud partner with the NCSA... the ultimate source for all your recruiting needs!

Andrew Lopez

Andrew Lopez tweeted last night that Tulane has four remaining openings and hopes to sign two WRs and two "best available" players. I have no idea of his source or its accuracy. However, I don't find this inconsistent with what Guerry reported earlier, that we planned to sign three more players (prior to the commitment by John Washington). It could be (guessing here) we planned to sign three more and leave two slots open (assuming they are available) in case a "long shot" developed. What does concern me is that Lopez's info would suggest we do not plan to sign Bennet Moehring or any other kicker/punter. I have no idea what the story is there, but Moehring has not tweeted any information since his visit.

The other concern is the WR situation. If we plan to sign two more (and I think that would be good), we're not in the best competitive situation playing in a G5 conference and coming off of a 3-9 record. The fact that we have no WR coach adds to the problem. There are certainly several wide outs potentially available (my personal favorite being Hunter Register), but the best ones have other suitors. Despite all, I think we should be able to get 1-2 good ones.

Roll Wave!!!

Two more recruiting weekends

We've got two more weekends to shore up our class. With Moehring and Register going elsewhere, the time is getting very late. It doesn't look like we'll pick up a kicker/punter, though Ivy Wall (Oak Forest Academy in Amite, La.), is still available. He was originally a UAB commit and is rated higher as a punter than a kicker. He's clearly less well thought of than Moehring, so he's probably not an attractive option.

But there are still a few good wide receivers out there. I doubt if it means anything directly for us, but Alfred Smith (Destrehan) decommitted from Arizona State yesterday after his official visit and Brandon Singleton (Hahnville) also backed out of his Georgia Tech commitment. If nothing else it puts more WR's out there to take up slots elsewhere if not here. Keep a good thought.

Roll Wave!!!
