Rising star Floyd Schofield returns to action to take on Rene Tellez Giron on November 2 in Las Vegas. The 12-round bout, plus undercard action, will be broadcast by DAZN.

With over 100 wins as an amateur, Schofield (17-0) quickly caught the eye of Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions. "Kid Austin" impressed in December 2023 with a first-round knockout of Ricardo Torres. His last fight was a March DQ win over Esteuri Suero.

The 22-year-old hopes to send a message of intent to the lightweight elite when he main events a Golden Boy show.

"I am beyond excited for my return to the ring as the official main event and to show the world what I've been working on," said Schofield. "My goal is simple: become a world champion. My opponent has measured up against some tough contenders and will be looking to steal the show, but we won't let him do that this time around."

Mexico's Giron (20-3) has had 13 knockouts and is on a three-fight win streak. He looks to use his impeccable defensive game and timing to halt Schofield's momentum.

"I'm so excited about this fight, like none other so far in my career. Floyd Schofield, he's just another big-name guy on my way to the top of the lightweight division," said Giron. "I will win. My preparation is always great, that's why I just scored two big wins in my last two fights. I like upsets, I'm that guy that will take your heart. I'm a proud fighter of Mexico, I will win this fight for my country, I'm tough."

A title eliminator fight is on the Floyd Schofield vs. Rene Tellez Giron undercard, while an undisputed title fight looks to steal the show.

Quote board: Tulane 34, Charlotte 3

Although he felt good about a second win on the road in a short week, Jon Sumrall was not overly pleased with Tulane's win tonight. Let's face it, Charlotte was absolutely awful, shooting itself in the foot repeatedly while quarterback Deshawn Purdie played like the shaky true freshman he is while his teammates were completely undisciplined. The Wave will take the comfortable victory, hammer an even worse Temple team two Saturdays from now and move on to the two games that really matter against Navy and Memphis to close the regular season.

Sumrall wants better execution from Darian Mensah and more attention to detail from a defense that gave up fewer than 200 yards and scored a touchdown but gave Charlotte three great opportunities to score TDs in the first half. The 49ers said no thank you, managing only one field goal out of those three possessions.

I will be at the Navy game after covering the last two road games from home, and if Tulane ends up having to travel to Army for the AAC Championship, I will go there, too. But I can't see how Army would be ranked higher than a 10-2 Tulane if the Black knights lose as expected to Notre Dame.

Sumrall, Micah Robinson and Makhi Hughes talked on Zoom after the game.

SUMRALL

"Short week, back-to-back road games in a short week, tremendous challenge. I'm really grateful for our guys' effort today, just finding a way. Didn't play clean early in the game. The first half we were a little sluggish. We missed some opportunities and we gave them some opportunities. We didn't execute great at times, but coming out of the halftime, getting a field goal on the first drive and then getting the pick-six, good things started to happen. We played really good defense later in the game. We played really poor defense early in the game. Going 12 of 18 on third downs while they went 1 of 12 was critical. The 42 minutes in time of possession is pretty amazing, and just 431 yards to 189, you are going to win most of the time when you do that. Happy for our guys. Ready to get on the plane and get home. We are a tired bunch. We'll rest up the next couple days. The guys have some academic stuff and training room stuff to do tomorrow. They'll have the weekend off and then we'll get back to work on Monday to get ready for Temple."

On 20-play, 80-yard, 10:58 drive on opening possession:

"We just showed on that drive that we were able to sustain. We didn't finish the way you want to. We had to kick a field goal there that drive, but a 20-play drive just shows you are able to execute over and over. We found ways to convert on third down and just keep the drive extended. Obviously we need to score touchdowns in those situations and not kick field goals, but it was a really impressive drive for sure."

On Makhi Hughes carrying 84 times in the last 12 days, with 27 more coming tonight:

"He's a load, man, and he plays like it. He's that guy that doesn't flinch. Just down in the locker room, he acted like hadn't done anything today. He looked pretty fresh to me. He's an impressive dude the way he carries himself. He's super physical and tough. We need to get him some rest this week as well, but he's a really tough runner for sure."

On Darian Mensah:

"Yeah, I thought we missed a throw on the post to Mario (Mensah threw well behind him) that should have been a touchdown. We were a little off on the one to Alex Bauman on the pop pass, but for the most part we threw it efficiently. We probably could have been a little bit better in the throw game. I think he would tell you he could have one or two back and probably do better, but a good day, a solid day. We're going to need to throw the ball a little bit better at times, but a good day for the most part."

On pressuring Deshawn Purdie:

"He's played in several games, but they've kind of done that quarterback shuffle a little bit between him and Max Brown. He's the one that came in last week and really gave their offense a jolt against Memphis. He also came in against Rice and gave their offense a jolt. I think the kid's really talented. He has a huge arm. I think they felt like give the hot hand a shot. He played pretty good against us early. He took some access throws. He hit us on a three-out route coming back to our sideline. He has a live arm. The kid's going to be a heck of a player."

On Micah Robinson's pick-six, Tulane's fifth defensive TD of the year:

"Wow. To have five defensive touchdowns is just unbelievable. If you score on defense, you should win a lot of games, and that was a critical play in the game. It was a huge momentum play, so that was such an awesome play to see Micah make. I told him on the sideline late in the game I was just as happy as I was with the pick-six, he missed a tackle in the first half on a run play they pulled him into the fit; he made one of those later in the game, and I said I'm just as proud of the tackle you made. Everybody's going to pat you on the back for the pick-six. That's an obvious big play, but we gotta tackle better on the perimeter, and he did that later in the game."

On Sumrall's catch of the errant pass on the sideline during the fourth quarter:

"Well, Brayden Berezowitz, who works on the defensive staff, was my G.A. at Kentucky, and he knows this fact, that my high school interception record's held by me. so I've got decent hands. I'm not going to act like I'm Randy Moss. I'm not going to jump over anybody, but if it's thrown to me, I can catch it. Catch the ones they throw you."

On his high school record for INTS:

"It was 17. I set the school record."

On Sam Howard status:

"They X-rayed. It's an ankle, I don't know if it's low or high yet. While the rest of the guys have the weekend off he'll be in the training room. I think he'll be available, but we'll see. Don't really know. It's too early to tell. The X-ray showed no break there. We were worried about a fracture, but there's not."

On Arnold Barnes status:

"He's fine. He's fine. We put Shaadie in and he looked pretty good."

On holding Charlotte to 3 points and under 200 yards:

"It could have been a lot better. I thought we played really rotten situational football on defense in the first half. The drive right before the halftime we gave up, it was so self-inflicted. We didn't line up right once. We didn't tackle. It was a mess for a minute there defensively, but we settled in and played a lot better in the second half. I'm glad to see that. We need to play a lot better."

On the timeout he called right before Charlotte's bad snap on third-and-goal from the 1:

"We were not matched up properly with the formation. We were a little off. We sent the call in and the guys didn't line up properly, so I didn't want to give them a freebie. The snap was a little high, and I was like Oh my God. Had it been a clean snap, they probably would have had a touchdown on us."

On his halftime speech with only a 10-3 lead:

"Nothing crazy. I was probably more composed than you would expect. I just said, hey guys, we haven't played to our standard completely, but now it's time to do it. It's a four-quarter game for a reason, and we had to go out and execute a lot better than we had and play with a little different chip on our shoulder, and the guys did that."

On Patrick Jenkins making tackle on first play:

"It's so good having Pat back. I love Patrick Jenkins. He's a phenomenal teammate, a great player and it's right when he's with us. We wrapped our arms around him this week and so good to have him back with the team and a phenomenal young man."

On what it will take to stay undefeated in AAC:

"We've got to play a lot better in some situations. We've got to throw and catch early in the game better. We can't be stagnant on offense. We have to score touchdowns. We're going to lose a game or two here down the stretch if we don't play more efficiently or clean on defense and leverage the ball properly. If we're supposed to be outside, stay outside, and then we tackled a little sloppy. There are so many areas where I'm not pleased. We'll take a 30-point win, but we've got to get better."

On the schedule for the rest of the weekend:

"Tomorrow morning they have to check in the training room before noon. We get back at probably 2 a.m. or 3 a.m. They have priority registration coming up next week for spring classes, so they can't leave tomorrow until they've done that with the academic advisors or at least gotten their stuff ready to register on Monday morning, and then Saturday and Sunday we are going to give them off. They need a little time. This has been a stretch these last five or six days, so we'll give them Saturday or Sunday off unless you're injured like Sam Howard. He'll be in the training room. But if they're healthy and good to go for Monday's practice, then they'll have a couple of days."

On keeping starters in for most of fourth quarter:

"The last drive we put Ty (Thompson) in at quarterback. We sent Darion Reed in at tackle. We kept Darian Mensah in because we just felt like there were some things we needed him at the end to execute the way we wanted him to, but we're still not playing at a high level and efficiently. I wanted to see us throw the ball a little bit just for the future of this team. And then at the end we subbed. When we were up 27-3, I'm not real comfortable mass exodus subbing yet. And then when we got up 34-3, it felt a little bit better."

Update: Thursday, Oct. 24

So I asked Jon Sumrall about Will Hall's presence at practice Tuesday and Wednesday (he was not there today) after the Thursday walkthrough, and this is what he said:

"I've known Will several years. Good friends. Obviously was the offensive coordinator here for two years. Coached against him the last two years when he was at Southern Miss and we were at Troy, but have known him way before that, going back several years. When everything went down, we texted. We text throughout the year, all the time anyways. We're friends. And when everything happened Sunday, he texted me Sunday morning and just said, hey, loved watching y'all play this year, let's connect, and then it all came out and we connected that night, talked again the next day. He's not an employee at Tulane, but he might be a remote conversation for our offensive staff or myself. I've got a lot of respect for Will. Love him. Great friend to me and somebody I pulled for other than when we played him. The '22 year that they came here and won the game, the Cotton Bowl year, we played them the next week and beat them and I always was trying to lobby that hey, Tulane and Troy ahd the same common opponent and Troy won the game, so I was trying to get us in the Cotton Bowl, but nobody listened to me. A lot of respect for Will. Our profession's very tight knit, and even though you compete guys, you're friends with him. It was fun to have him here for a couple of days. It wouldn't surprise me if you show up at practice at some point in the next few weeks, if he's not here on a practice day. He's not moving here. His kids are still in school. He's got a seventh grader and an 11th grader."

I also asked about Shazz Preston. I'm still skeptical that he can help the team yet, but he definitely received more work in practice this week than last.

"He's legitimately practiced. There's a chance he'll play. It's not going to be a huge number. He's in a backup role, but flow of the game, he could play. Last year he was available, but he wasn't available unless we had a big lead."

I then asked him if they were considering redshirting Preston, but he misunderstand the question as one about redshirting the freshman and gave an informative answer--just not about Preston.

"It's relevant (redshirting guys), but Shaun Nicholas is playing because he's having a big enough impact on special teams. He's the first or second guy down on kickoff coverage. We talked about it as a staff--coach McMahon and I talked about how big is his role. We talked about Jarvis Landry (at LSU), who got drafted because of his special teams stuff as a freshman. After thinking through it, he's the only one (true freshman) that will play the rest of the year. He doesn't have a crazy number of catches. He's not big catching the ball, but he's probably our best blocking wide receiver, so there's a role even though it's maybe not flashy that I think will benefit him as his development goes the next year or two, that he played this year and went out there and competed. Shaun's the one that will play. Jamauri (McClure), we'd like to reserve and hold the redshirt, and that's the plan. The problem for Jamauri is the number of carries doesn't merit (burning the redshirt), and he doesn't have the same special teams value that Shaun does. Reese Baker we would like to hold the redshirt and that's the plan. He's probably our third best tackle, and he's going to be a really good player, but is he ready for prime time? No. So he doesn't have enough value right now. He'd only go in if there's injuries. He knows what the situation is. If there's major injuries, all those guys know you have to lose the redshirt if something catastrophic happens. The team's bigger than the individual, and they all understand that. We've had conversations and they all know where they're at."

I'm not crazy about them deciding to redshirt McClure, but he is eligible to play two more games and keep his redshirt. The running back room is deep, and clearly they believe Duda Barnes and Shaadie Clayton-Johnson and Trey Cornist are good enough that McClure cannot help them win games this year. I'm not so sure about that, but I see where they are coming from.

Update: Tuesday, Oct.29

I had to write a men's hoops preview yesterday that will run Saturday in the paper in addition to the football notebook that ran today, so I had no time to transcribe the Tuesday presser or do a report. The practice was a walkthrough, so there''s nothing to report there.

Jon Sumrall is a more traditional coach than Willie Fritz, hyping up every opponent as dangerous when Fritz was so intent on being even keeled that he did not do it much. You'd think Charlotte was Alabama the way Sumrall talked about the 49ers yesterday. He definitely wants to ensure Charlotte has his players' full attention on a short week with back-to-back road games, something no other team in the country has experienced this year except for Texas State, which played at Sam Houston (in a game Sam Houston moved to the Houston Texans home stadium an hour away from its campus) and then traveled to Troy. Texas State had no trouble with the second leg, dispatching Troy 38-17, but it had lost by 1 to Sam Houston in an upset.

Sumrall, Dontae Fleming and Jack Tchienchou, who led the team in tackles against North Texas, spoke yesterday. I really liked Tchienchou in spring drills and still do. The fact that he does not start is an indication of the real depth Tulane has this year on defense--the best depth by far in the years I've covered the team. Tyler Grubbs, the leading tackler for the year, has 35 stops, which is an incredibly low number for the top guy. He's on pace for about 60 tackles for the year, when he had 75 a year ago. Jesus Machado had 98 last season. Darian Williams had 131 in 2022. Macon Clark's 73 in 2021, when Tulane played only 12 games, was the low for the Fritz era. Darian Williams had 98 in 2020, Chase Kuerschen 76 in 2019, Zachery Harris 95 in 2018, Rae Juan Marbley 96 in 2017 and Nico Marley 86 in 2016.

Tulane's leading tacklers this year have been Bailey Despanie (Southeastern), Rayshawn Pleasant (Kansas State), Sam Howard (Oklahoma), Grubbs (ULL and South Florida), Micah Robinson (UAB), Robinson and Despanie (Rice) and Tchienchou.

SUMRALL

"Back-to-back road trips against really good opponents. Charlotte's a really good team. On film they are as talented as anybody in our conference. I watch them and athlete for athlete they are really, really good, so we've got our work cut out for us and it's going to be a hostile environment. We have to get ready to play."

On what concerns him the most about QB Deshawn Purdie:

"He has a really big arm. He can throw it. He has a 67-yard push I believe on the one post. He threw it probably 70-plus yards because it was a little big diagonal. He's got a huge arm, is a good runner (actually, he has carried 25 times for minus-120 yards, with sacks counting toward rushing total in college), very talented, gifted athlete. He's an elite athlete and he has a huge arm. The shot plays really scare with you. He's an explosive play waiting to happen in the throw game or the run game (he had a 15-yard run against North Carolina and none longer than 5 since then). We've got to be really good if he is the guy. If he's not the guy, get ready for whoever."

On if they are preparing for both quarterbacks (Florida transfer Max started against Memphis before being pulled for ineffectiveness):

"Their skill set's maybe different to some degree. They have a really good offensive identity. It's just like anything. One guy may be better in a certain area of his game, so you have to know what a guy's strengths are, but the offense is good either way. They really lean on the run game a lot. They've got a great running back group, a really good O-line. This team is really good. I can't tell you enough. Their record, you can throw that out. Watch them on tape last week against Memphis. They are really good, so we've go to be prepared."

On his respect for the AAC:

"There are a lot of athletic teams. Look, I go back to UAB and their receiver room I thought was elite going into the game, and when I left the game, if you ask our guy who play slot corner for us, our spears, they would tell you those guys at slot were dangerous. Everybody in this league has players at certain spots, and everybody has different strengths. These guys are littered with Power 4 transfers (40 by my count) on the roster. It's like we're playing a Power 4 team in our conference this week is what it feels like off the ability they have. That's who they are. The league's very challenging, week in and week out. There's no lay-up."

On difficulty of short week:

"You have to be fast and fresh. The worse thing we can do is make our guys worn down all week. Quick turnaround, so you have to be fast and fresh. Greg McMahon and I say to each other a lot, play songs that they know the words to. Don't turn on a new song they've never heard before and ask them to sing the lyrics because they don't know it. Give them a song they know the lyrics to. We have some game plan adjustment things that are unique and different for every game. Even in a short week you have to have some, but do what we do well and be who we are, that gives us the best chance to be fast and fresh and know what to do."

On difference this week from the prep for Rice game:

"Two weeks ago today I was pissed after practice. I was about ready to pull somebody's face off. This week has been really good. The condensed part of the deal can help you in some ways. Now the back-to-back road trips may be not how you would design it they had handed the schedule to me, but I felt a much better focus in our practices. That (the Rice practice issues) were coming off the bye. This group, we're going to be ready to play. They better be. I told them on Sunday's team meeting this is on ESPN, the mother ship, not after dodge ball, not before pingpong. It's really ESPN, so you've got to be ready for a game like this, and if you're not, you have a problem."

On seeing Charlotte for first time:

"You're trying to figure out who are their players. You're also trying to figure out the scheme is so different. That's what makes college football unique. Last year we played an air raid, up-tempo, throw the ball for 400 or 500 yards if they could team. This week we're playing more of a pro style offense (this has always killed me in college football that teams which run most of the time are labeled pro style when NFL teams pass most of the time) with multiple tight ends, run the ball down your throat, take shots off the running game and the play action. You're dealing with identifying the personnel and the schematics that they use and how does it affect what we do. You just have to press fast forward on some of that, and then the travel component, we got back Saturday night and we'll leave tomorrow. It feels like we just got home, so there are a lot of moving parts."

On Tchienchou:

"Jack's a really smart kid. He's a very talented athlete. He played a lot of different positions at his high school. He went to St. Pius in Atlanta. He's really gifted. He's fast, explosive, twitchy, makes plays, is a high-energy guy who positively affects other people around him. It's been fun to watch him grow at free safety. He's been involved as a depth returner for us. He's got a bright future."

On Patrick Jenkins:

"Pat Jenkins is the foundational piece of this team. He's been here for several years (three) now. He went to John Ehret High, left early in college (to TCU) and then came back home. When the coaching transition happened back in December, he could very easily have decided to leave. There were a lot of people who would have loved for him to go somewhere else, and he chose to stay. I think mom was a big component of that. He lived with mom. I cannot understate that relationship. He's a special guy. We talk about family, and we live it. He's family to us. He's back with his team and better for that and I know we're better for it, too, but you could not ask for a more quality young man that Patrick Jenkins. Heartbreaking situation, but we love him and it's been a joy having him back and we're walking through this together with him because that's what families do, that's who we are."

On Sumrall family game plan for Halloween:

"I just found out last night my street's like shut down or something. Whatever they're doing I can guarantee you my wife will have the game on. She's addicted more than I am, so they'll have the TV out and they'll be watching. I'm sure they'll dress up. I asked my son what he was dressed up as he said a football player. I said, come on, you've got to be more original than that. That's not very creative. They'll be watching it. They'll try to get a little trick or treating done, but they'll be watching it. The kids love it."

The Monday practice was open to reporters today with the short week, and one way they took the work load off the players was to have them take off their shoulder pads midway through the workout when they got to scout-team work. Jon Sumrall is very conscientious about keeping his guys as fresh as possible, looking for the perfect balance between preparation and physical recovery.

Patrick Jenkins was back out there, and it goes without saying his return will be invaluable. Matthew Fobbs-White had the only sack against North Texas, and the Wave's five tackles for loss were its fewest in four AAC games. I think Kam Hamilton has been more effective outside than inside this year, and this will allow him to move back to end with a starting unit of him, Eric Hicks, Jenkins and Fobbs-White, with Adin Huntington factoring in heavily at bandit, too, and Gerrod Henderson spelling Hamilton at end. Tulane's depth up front will be very helpful against a Charlotte team that is coming off a frustrating last-minute loss to Memphis. Fobbs-White, who did not have a tackle other than his huge strip sack against North Texas, is going to be a heck of a player. He made a nice interception about 15 yards down the field against the scout team today.

Linebacker Makai Williams, who has not played much other than on special teams this year, was getting reps today as the fifth linebacker in the rotation. Charlotte has not passed more than 23 times in a game since freshman DeShawn Purdle became the starter, and I'm guessing Tulane feels its linebackers are going to be heavily involved. Purdle is not a running threat at all, but he has a strong (though inaccurate) arm. Tulane should win this game comfortably if the players have their heads in the right place.

Sumrall, Tyler Grubbs and Alex Bauman spoke to me after practice:

SUMRALL

On playing two road games in six days:

"You play the hand you're dealt, so I don't really worry too much about it. Is it unique to play road and road with a short week? Sure. I haven't dealt with that much, but for us, it's about making sure we're as mentally prepared and as physically prepared as we can be to play our best. Today was kind of a Tuesday and a Wednesday combined. Tomorrow is a Thursday, Wednesday is a Friday and then Thursday is our Saturday, so you lose a couple of days on the calendar. Yesterday had to be a Monday for us. You're sped up a little, and you just have to plan accordingly and make sure we get ourselves an opportunity to be prepared to go play our best."

On his stressing toughness as a team mantra:

"First off, I'd say toughness is a talent. We talk about it all the time. It's one of our four core values. It was probably my biggest fear about this team back in spring practice. I was concerned were we as tough as we needed to be. I feel like we have grown in that area as much as any. I'm such a believer that toughness travels. Tough teams find a way to win. Tough teams don't back down. I talk a lot about being smart tough, not dumb tough. I'm not interested in maybe beating our chests. It's just being mentally resilient and fighting through adversity and never backing down. I think our guys have practiced that way. They've really embraced that core value as much as any in this training camp through the year."

On coaching toughness:

"You just embody it every day. I'm a firm believer that players are going to emulate some of the actions that coaches have. The old adage that if you prepare, practice and train soft, you'll play soft. If you prepare, practice and train hard, you can play tough. You don't ever rise to the occasion. You follow the level of your training, so how are you trained? We try to train tough, and I think our guys embrace that."

On Tyler Grubbs showing toughness after hurting his knee three days before the USF game:

"He's the embodiment of it. When your best players and your leaders take on that trait, other guys follow it. In particular our inside linebacker room with Grubbs and Sam (Howard), two tough guys that play the game hard and play the game the right way, guys follow that. Makhi Hughes is a really tough dude on our offense, and he happens to be a really good player. Well, guys follow that, so when your best players are also your toughest guys it makes a really good combination for your team."

On Alex Bauman's importance to the offense:

"Ridiculous. Yeah. He's one of those unsung guys who's just so consistent and steady. He's very detailed. He's a great pass catcher. Everybody recognizes that. He's a better blocker than people realize. He understands angles and leverage. He's tough. He had a hit where we all were like, oh goodness, and then he's back in a couple of games. He brings so much to the table for our offense that makes us more multiple."

Group of Five top 10 (after week 9)

Boise State is still in the driver's seat and will need to lose for any other team to get the playoff spot, even in the unlikely event Army goes undefeated.

1) Boise State (7-1)

Comment: The Broncos were in a little bit of trouble against UNLV and could not open consistent holes for Ashton Jeanty, but they did enough to win a tough game on the road. No team has a better loss than theirs, by 3 at No. 1 Oregon on a tie-breaking field goal in the final minute. I think San Diego State has a shot to get them this week in a letdown game in Boise. San Diego State was up 12 on Washington State in the fourth quarter on Saturday when a long pass bounced off the hands of an Aztecs DB and into the hands of a Washington State receiver, sparking the Cougars' comeback victory. The Aztecs are better than their 3-4 record indicates.

2) Tulane (6-2)

Comment: Tulane has a chance to build a resume that will be tough to top for any team other than Boise State. Although Oklahoma's descent is not helping, the way Kansas State, ULL and Memphis continue to win is a big deal. A 12-1 Tulane with a good loss to Kansas State and victories against Navy, Memphis, ULL and Army in the AAC Championship Game would be compelling. The Wave still is not clicking on all cylinders on either side of the ball, but it is playing plenty well enough to keep winning.

3) UNLV (6-2)

Comment: I'm not dropping UNLV for losing a hard-fought game to Boise State. The Running Rebels played like they have in every game I've see this year, showing toughness and an ability to hang closer than their talent level suggests. The trick now is keeping that same toughness after an emotional defeat. One slip-up would keep them out of the Mountain West title game, and 3-0 Colorado State has a much easier schedule (no Boise, no UNLV, no San Diego State) in a league that plays only seven conference games.

4) Army (7-0)

Comment: Army has not played anyone, but it has done what good teams should do to inferior opponents--score touchdowns on it opening drive every time and never trail in seven straight blowouts. We will learn how good this team is when it plays at North Texas on Nov. 9 in what should be a bad matchup for the Army defense assuming Chandler Morris is healthy enough to play. A win there would almost assure Army of a spot in the AAC title game.

5) Navy (6-1)

Comment: Navy never was going to beat Notre Dame, but a finger injury that star quarterback Blake Horvath carried into that game gave the Middies no shot to be competitive. He was loose with the ball as a team that had lost zero fumbles all year and committed only two turnovers coughed it up six times against the Irish. That's a recipe for a debacle, which is what it became. If Horvath is OK, I don't see anyone on the November schedule other than Tulane that can trouble Navy, so the Wave game on Nov. 16 will be huge.

6) UL-Lafayette (6-1)

Comment: I'm still skeptical about this team, but the Cajuns gave Tulane plenty of trouble in sauna-like conditions in September and have not lost since then. They face a big test at Texas State tomorrow night before three straight home games against Arkansas State, South Alabama and Troy. None of those are gimmes except for probably Troy, but if they win tomorrow, they will be in good shape to reach the Sun Belt title game. They are not in the picture for a playoff berth.

7) Memphis (7-1)

Comment: I can't fathom how the Tigers cracked the coaches' top 25 this week after needing a long touchdown drive in the last 80 seconds to overcome a 4-point deficit to Charlotte at home. They have a ton of talent, but they look bad for stretches of every game, including giving up 75-yard touchdowns to North Texas on the first two offensive plays two weeks ago. Still, it is hard to imagine them losing to UTSA, Rice or UAB in their next three games, so they very well could be playing for a spot in the AAC championship game when they face Tulane on Thanksgiving. They are dangerous but darned inconsistent.

8) North Texas (5-3)

Comment: The Mean Green is not physical enough to beat the top contenders in the AAC, but man, that pass offense is dangerous. The combination of bubble screens and big plays to an array of talented receivers and one great one make this team a scary opponent. If they beat Army in two weeks, they might not lose again.

9) Western Kentucky (5-2)

Comment: Look for the Hilltoppers to win their next three games for sure, and they probably will beat overrated Liberty on the road after that. My (hypothetical) money is on them to win Conference USA.

10) Old Dominion (4-4)

Comment: The Monarchs nearly beat South Carolina in their opener and have hit their stride in the past two games, winning comfortably at Texas State, which many people thought was the best team in the Sun Belt, and blowing out Georgia Southern, which I thought was the best team in the Sun Belt. We could be looking at an Old Dominion-ULL Sun Belt title game.

Quote board: Tulane 45, North Texas 37

Well, for the first time since Tulane started doing Zoom calls in 2020, they could not get one to work today. I talked to Jon Sumrall on the phone but got no players.

Tulane played well enough to win and could have won by a lopsided margin if Dickson Agu had not held on the deflected ball he intercepted with a 45-24 lead. The defense got too soft and too handsy down the stretch, needing to recover a perfect onside kick to ensure victory. I don't really have much to say about this one. I almost pegged the score at 41-31 and the game played out pretty much like I thought it would (I knew Patrick Jenkins probably was not going to play but was told not to say anything until this morning). North Texas is really good in the passing game. Tulane tackled well for the most part but had a couple of coverage breakdowns on North Texas's first two TDs (one by Lu Tillery, the other by Caleb Ransaw). I did not like the run on third-and-6 from inside the Wave 10 with a 21-3 lead early in the second quarter, but that's nitpicking. Tulane had the right plan on offense and executed it well. There were zero dropped passes by the receivers, a massive improvement from the Rice game.

The Wave almost definitely will be 8-2 when it heads to Navy for the Nov. 16 game, and if Memphis had not gone 75 yards in less than 80 seconds to beat Charlotte today, a win against Navy would have clinched a spot in the championship game. Now it is still possible the Wave will have to beat Memphis on Nov. 26 in a winner-gets-in game.

SUMRALL

On if North Texas was giving Tulane the run:

"It was interesting. At times they were loading the box and then at times they weren't. Then there were a couple of times when they did have numbers in the box but we were able to half things up and Makhi (Hughes) ran strong. As the game went on, they really committed to stopping the run in the second half. It got to the point where we needed to run it to keep the clock rolling, but they were making it really hard to run in those predictable situations. We had to kind of work through the air some but also still run it even though it might not be there as much you'd like but you needed to keep the clock moving."

On getting out to 21-3 lead in first quarter:

"Against a team like that which is so explosive, you never have enough points honestly. They are capable of scoring 21 real fast in their own right, like you saw at the end, so you can't ever pull off the gas against a team like that. They have the ability to strike fast, so getting out to a lead's great, but there is no lead that's safe against a team like that because they can score in droves."

On play of the defense:

"Yeah, the drive that was really aggravating was the 23-play drive where we had a couple of DPIs, We're off the field on a couple of them if we just don't get penalized. There's some aggravating things in there. We could have played a lot better. We played good enough to hold on, but we did not finish maybe in a way that any of us are pleased with."

On onside kick:

"It was an unbelievable onside kick. Bryce (Bohanon) did a great job going and getting the ball. He couldn't have gone down soon enough for me, though, after catching it. He started to take a step or two and we were all screaming, 'go down!' But really good job by him getting his hands on it and securing the game for us."

On Matthew Fobbs-White strip sack:

"Yeah, an unbelievable job by Fobbs-White. Really making the decision to go for it on fourth there didn't work. Him getting that sack and forced fumble was a game-changer."

On Makhi Hughes:

"He is a beast. He's just an absolute stud. He's a workhorse. He just chews yards up and is physical and plays the game the right way. Our team, everybody watches him play and is just in awe of how he plays because he's so physical and tough. He's always churning yards out."

On Arnold Barnes:

"It was a solid performance by him. He was good in some areas. It was fun to see him have some production. His biggest thing is just being consistent. He's got enough ability. We just need the consistency to look like every day, every play, all the time."

On Darian Mensah:

"If you take out the one interception, you feel pretty good about the way he played. The interception was an unforced error really that they had us covered and we just need to know not to try to force one in there. We don't need to do anything fancy, just play clean. They get a touchdown there right before the half and we get a field goal, so it ended up being a four-point advantage for them, but it was unforced and we did not handle that situation well."

On short week before Charlotte:

"Yeah, we'll have a good plan about making sure we've got enough things in to be multiple but at the same time fresh. I always think that you give yourself the best advantage in these games by being fast and fresh. We've got to get a little bit of work in. Tomorrow we'll just walk through stuff and then Monday will combine a Tuesday and Wednesday practice and then Tuesday will be like a Thursday walkthrough and Wednesday will be a Friday walkthrough and we'll go play the game."

On Will Karoll's massive punt:

"Oh my gosh. He's been big time. Honestly we didn't want him to hit that big of a bomb against that returner. We wanted it higher and a little bit shorter to be honest, but he did hit a bomb and is impressive with what his abilities are. But if he had a higher, shorter punt, we would have been happier with the opportunity to cover that. He's continued to punt the ball really well, though."

On interference penalties:

"It's extremely frustrating because you're just prolonging drives and sustaining opportunities for them when we could have ended the game if we just cleaned that up. We gave them too many opportunities there with some of those penalties for sure."

On Charlotte nearly beating Memphis:

"I heard. Charlotte's a much improved team. They are really a lot better than people realize."

On Patrick Jenkins:

"We talked about it last night. I addressed the defense on Monday about Pat's mom and then I addressed the team last night about why Pat wasn't here, so the guys knew. I told them, hey, look, with how you play today honor Pat, honor his family, honor his mom with your effort. Like he can't be here with us. Yesterday he had to make a decision on some arrangements, and I understood that and respected that. When we celebrated in the locker room today, we Facetimed Pat and he was in there with us on Facetime, so the technology of having Pat live with us in the celebration and seeing a big smile on his face, I can't wait for tomorrow to give him a big hug."

The matchup that baseball fans around the world have been waiting to see is finally here. The Yankees and Dodgers are ready to square off in the 2024 World Series.

New York was able to eliminate Kansas City and Cleveland in the American League bracket on its way to the World Series. Giancarlo Stanton and Juan Soto have been on fire in the playoffs, combining for eight home runs in nine games, but the Yankees are still waiting for Aaron Judge to break out of his postseason funk.

The Yankees have 27 total World Series wins under their belt — more than any other MLB team. However, it has been 15 years since the Yankees won their last title, and this is their first time appearing in the World Series since then. The Dodgers claimed their latest title win in 2020 — after losing in 2017 and 2018 to two teams later accused of stealing signs.

The Dodgers-Yankees rivalry was hot in the 1940s and 50s, when the teams — with LA then the Brooklyn Dodgers — met in seven World Series championships, six of which the Yankees won. The Dodgers moved from Brooklyn to Los Angeles in 1958.

The men in pinstripes have had a clear advantage when it comes to World Series wins against the Dodgers, having won 73% of World Series titles against Los Angeles/Brooklyn. However, when looking at all games played between the two teams — during the regular season and in the playoffs — they stack up more evenly.

Of the 88 games the teams have ever played against each other, the Yankees have won 55% of them and the Dodgers won 45%.sadsadsgfdhfdh

Lightweights Dusty Sparks (1-0, 1 KO) and Hasan Al-Ghanim (2-0, 2 KOs) are next on the docket. This is Sparks’ first fight under the BKFC promotion after winning his debut on April 27 via third-round knockout over Cole Sikes at MMAX FC 29: Heavy Hitters in Poteau, Oklahoma. Al-Ghanim is back in the ring less than two months after knocking out Ryan Ibsen at 1:13 of the opening round at BKFC Prospect Series: Edmonton on Aug. 31.

The final preliminary fight pits Ruben Arroyo in his bare-knuckle debut against Nash Diederichs (0-1). Arroyo was scheduled to fight Dylan Schulte on May 31 before the bout was cancelled. Diederichs debuted in Edmonton on Aug. 31 and was stopped 50 seconds into the fight by Matt Scholotiuk. Arroyo is a featherweight moving up to lightweight for the fight while Diederichs is a welterweight coming down in weight class.

The previous BKFC event was held mid October in Marbella, Spain. In the main event, Argentinian-born Spain-based Franco Tenaglia became a new BKFC lightweight champion by majority decision against Tony Soto of Hickory, North Carolina.

Pick 'em: Week 8 (NOTE: Friday night game on the list)

For the first time this year, there were more than eight interesting games to choose from. I had a hard time getting it down to eight.

As always, the Tulane game counts double, home teams are listed first, neutral games are designated as such and the spreads come from VegasInsider.com

North Texas (+7.5) Tulane
UNLV (+3) Boise State
Notre Dame (-13) Navy (East Rutherford, N.J.)
Alabama (-13.5) Missouri
Vanderbilt (+18.5) Texas
Texas A&M (-2.5) LSU
Colorado (-5.5) Cincinnati
Wisconsin (+6.5) Penn State

Week 7 pick 'em results

We all lost with Tulane, and overall it was one of the roughest weeks ever with only six of 15 pickers getting at least half of the games right.

Back from NOLA

Back from NOLA

My wife and I spent the last week in New Orleans visiting our grandson who is a freshman at Tulane, as well as old friends from as far back as 70 years ago. We had some great meals and a couple that were disappointing, but overall excellent.

We went to the football game, and I probably can’t add anything to what others have said over the last few days. But, I have two non-football observations. The student body section was packed shortly after the opening kickoff, but I’d guess that 80% left at half-time with the score tied. By the fourth quarter, I’d guess no more than 10% of the original group was still there. To me, that was disappointing. But I pointed out to my grandson that when Bob Toledo came to Tulane, he took the team over to the student section at the end of the first game to sing the Alma Mater. There were something like 6 students there. So, student support is a lot better now.

Secondly, we were amazed at the girl (young woman) who took a carryall of water around to each of the referees at every break in the action. She must have sprinted 100+ yards at a time and probably logged a couple of miles carrying that thing. If she’s not on the cross-country team, she missed her calling. Anyway, we were impressed.

I also got to participate in the Baseball Alumni events. No-one I played with attended but Dick Roniger (a Senior when I was a Freshman) and Johnny Arthurs, better known for basketball (a Freshman when I was a senior) were there. We got to spend some time remembering some of the people who overlapped one or the others of us. Good times.
