With just two defeats to their name in the current CONMEBOL qualifying campaign, only Colombia have lost fewer games than Ecuador at this stage, with Sebasitan Beccacece's side proving to be stubborn opponents in the South American section.

Goals have been something of an issue though, as La Tri have scored just once across their last four qualifiers with both of their fixtures last month ending in goalless draws against Paraguay and Uruguay respectively.

Bolivia Preview: Plucky underdogs

After an unprecedented three-game winning streak in World Cup qualifying, Bolivia were given a reality check by Lionel Messi-inspired Argentina in their most recent fixture last month, losing 6-0 to the reigning Copa America and world champions.

However, their recent winning run does keep them very much in the qualification mix, and they will look for another positive away result here after ending their 31-year wait for an away qualifying victory with a 1-2 victory over Chile in September.

Update: Tuesday, Nov. 12

Walk-on quarterback Dagan Bruno, a freshman who played for John Curtis, could be the most valuable player at practice this week for Tulane because he has a ton of experience running the option. John Curtis's split-back veer is not exactly the same as Navy's modified Wing T, but the option principles are the same and Bruno knows how to execute handoffs or pull the ball back and run, preparing the defense for Saturday's pivotal game at Navy. He played hard today, forcing me to scramble out of the way well behind the sideline as he finished runs around the corner at full speed. Those are the little things that can make a difference because no other Tulane quarterback has played in that type of offense.

I don't really think Navy will keep it close Saturday because quarterback Blake Horvath has an injured thumb on his throwing hand. Here is what coach Brian Newberry said Monday when asked about Horvath's thumb:

"I haven't talked to him today, but I got a decent report from the training staff this morning. It's the nature of that position that with what we do is have him carry the ball. He's a tough kid, now. He's gotten banged up a little bit, but he's in pretty good shape."

The follow-up question was if they had been forced to become more run heavy since the thumb injury.

"Our plan really hasn't changed throughout the course of the year. He's got to be able to run the ball for us. There's times where we may do a little bit more of that than others, but he's run it pretty effectively, so for us to be hitting on all cylinders, he's got to carry the ball for us."

Interesting. He ducked the question about how it was affecting Horvath's passing, but the numbers tell the story. Horvath completed 46 of 72 passes for 888 yards with 10 touchdowns and one interception through the Charlotte game, when he hurt his thumb. In the three games since then, he is 23 of 45 for 266 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. I did not see the South Florida game, but against Rice two weeks ago he was throwing wobbling ducks. He is still a very effective runner, but that added dimension Navy had earlier in the year, when Horvath threw for 192 yards and two touchdowns against Memphis, is gone.

Tulane will be at full strength defensively. Sam Howard returned to full practice this week and will play Saturday. Having an experienced player like him is important because as good as Dickson Agu was against Temple, he is more likely to bust as assignment than Howard, and busted assignments are a recipe for disaster against option teams.

The other key will be Tulane running well early. Navy stuffed South Florida, but Memphis ran for 274 yards on 38 carries in September and even UAB and Charlotte surpassed 185 yards on the ground against the Midshipmen. If they cannot slow down Makhi Hughes, it will open up play-action touchdown passes in bunches because their DBs cannot hang with Dontae Fleming, Mario Williams and Yulkeith Brown. Memphis torched them for 659 total yards despite losing 56-44. and there is no way Tulane's defense will struggle as much as the Tigers did when Navy gained 566 yards. Unless Tulane tenses up considering the magnitude of the game, I just don't see how this one is close late. I don't. It would involve Navy selling out to stop the run and Darian Mensah finally playing like a first-year starter instead of staying poised. If he has a first half like Justin McMillan did in 2019, then it could be a tight one. If he has to throw and plays like he is capable, Tulane will win comfortably. Despite its heavy emphasis on the run recently, Tulane is one of 12 teams averaging 200 or more yards on the ground and in the air, and the Wave is one of only five teams averaging at least 210 yards rushing and passing (Boise State, New Mexico, Tennessee and South Alabama are the others).

Sumrall, Alex Bauman and Tyler Grubbs talked after practice. I am posting some of Sumrall and will get the rest later.

SUMRALL

"Good Tuesday practice. It was a good day's work on both sides and the kicking game. I liked the energy today. We have a really big challenge this week on the road against a really good team. I've got a lot of respect for the way these guys play and the way they're coached. Navy is the class of our league in a lot of areas, and there's a reason why they are 7-2 and 5-1 in the league. They are really, really good. We've got our work cut out for us this week."

On having a lot of guys on defense:

"The depth of your team on defense a lot of times is different every year. The depth of guys making plays is fun to watch. This week the challenge is you have to be good at all three levels--alignment, assignment, eye discipline, technique, all of it. We were not pleased with the tackling a couple weeks ago in the Charlotte game, the first half in particular, so last year we did a little extra thud period. We're not allowed to do Oklahoma (drills) anymore. We just did a little thud tackle period. The look team today in our scout team for offense did a phenomenal job in today's practice. It's nice having Dagan Bruno running our scout team this week. He's pretty natural at it. He's got a lot of background handling the ball under center and doing some of the reading we're asking him to do this week."

On being ranked 25th in AP poll:

"I told our guys who cares? We're ranked in one poll. Like about half the people that vote in that poll didn't rank us (he is close; 25 of 62 did not rank Tulane), so we're not really that respected yet. We slid in the backdoor. We're 25th by the skin of our teeth, so I'm not that impressed, and if our team's very impressed, I'm not impressed. We're not that good yet. If we're worried about where we're ranked on Nov. 12, we're not going to be real pleased with how we're ranked Dec. 12. We haven't been ranked in the CFP yet. All that stuff, just win. Just win."

On talking about rat poison and don't eat the cheese:

"Don't buy into the hype. I tell everybody the same people who are patting you on the back and telling you how great you are are the same people who dog cuss you if you lose. They are. Aw, you're great. you're great. The same people if you go lose a game, they're like, oh, they suck, they're terrible. They are with you when you win and they're not when you're losing. I don't buy into the excitement of ranking, win streak. It's all garbage. It has zero effect on this week's game. We get to carry no points over from last week's game and count them this week. You get what you earn each week. This is a very humbling game. You get every seven days to get promoted or exposed, and everybody that we play is good enough to expose it. And if we also start to feel real comfortable about ourselves or complacent, we're not that good. We're good when we play with a lot of focus and detail and a chip on our shoulder and a blue-collar mindset. If we lose any of that edge, we will not be very good. But our guys have had the right mindset this week so far, and hopefully they'll continue that."

On if success against Army at Troy the past two years is relevant against Navy:

"There are some things. Leveraging the ball, having a dive/quarterback/pitch player. There are some elements that are the same. There are some schematic things that are different. The people are different. The Navy quarterback is a really good passer, which is unique. A lot of times in this offense he's just another running back in the backfield. He is that, too, but they have been explosive in the throw game. They are scary in a lot of areas. They are built a little differently by who their people are. The Army dive back the last couple of years looked like an offensive lineman who could run a 4.7. He was like 260, 270 pounds. I'm like who's this guy? They (Navy's guys) are a little more conventional running back-looking bodies. This No. 22 (Eli Heidenreich) that plays one of the slots for them is a Swiss Army knife guy that runs it really good, catches it really good. The schematics are unique. They play the game in different buckets. It's not just the triple option. Some of it's Wing T, some of it's they get in the gun and do more conventional things, so it's really like there's buckets you have to prepare for to play this game, and they get to dictate which bucket they're playing that down, and we have to adjust our eyes and our alignment to match. It is a real challenge."

On eye discipline in back of defense:

"It's critical. Eye discipline and then staying on top. To me it's about two things. It's about leverage on the ball, and it's about staying on top in the throw game. That's the challenge, and they've gotten most everybody they've played on it. They didn't play a great game against Notre Dame. That was turnover driven as much as anything. That was what got them, but you haven't really watched people just shut them down. They are very aggravating in what they do and they find a way to move the ball. It's a very efficient offense, and our defensive staff and kids have a huge task in front of them. And I'll say this, too. They're defense is probably not talked about enough. They create a ton of negative plays. They run a lot more zero pressure. They run the seven-up package that you have to have a good plan for, and they bring zero blitz from depth. They do some things that put stress on you in a lot of different ways."

Group of 5 top 10 (after week 11)

It's become simple. Boise State has to lose this Saturday at San Jose State or Tulane's playoff hopes will hinge slowly on the Mountain West Championship Game, which will take place on Fox on Dec. 6 at the exact same time as the Tulane-Army AAC title matchup (if the Wave gets there). I'm not sure Boise would finish behind Tulane if it lost this week and won the Mountain West, but it would be a close call for the committee, with the Broncos having by far the worst loss and Tulane having a better victory against Army than any of Boise's. If Oregon stays No. 1, Boise's last-minute loss at Oregon might be the trump card, although Tulane I believe is the better team.

1) Boise State (9-1)

Boise struggled against Nevada, the worst team in the Mountain West, winning 28-21 while benefiting from turnovers at its 29 and 1-yard lines. Maybe San Jose State, which lost in double OT to Washington State and beat Oregon State, can pull the surprise. Ken Niumatalolo's new team has little else going for it, though.

2) Tulane (8-2)

I'm having a hard time seeing how Tulane can lose again. This team has a plethora of playmakers on both sides of the ball and Jon Sumrall's Troy team held Army to 9 and zero points the past two years. He knows how to prepare for the option.

3) Army (9-0)

Army's game against Notre Dame likely will determine where the AAC title game is played if the Black Knights and Wave go 8-0. The tiebreaker will be which team has the higher college football playoff ranking going into the final weekend of league play. I assume that would be Tulane if Army loses to Notre Dame. It definitely would be Army if it finds a way to beat the Fighting Irish.

4) UNLV (7-2)

Like Boise, UNLV's toughest remaining game is at San Jose State. The Rebs eked past Hawaii this past weekend and will be locked out of the Mountain West title game if Colorado State keeps winning against the bottom half of the league. That's good for Tulane because a UNLV with wins over Kansas, Houston and Boise (with losses to Boise and Syracuse) would have a better resume than Tulane if clearly not as good a team. Kansas in particular and Houston a little bit are becoming better wins with their recent surges.

5) UL-Lafayette (8-1)

This team keeps getting better, That's great news for Tulane, which has zero other quality wins through 10 games. The Cajuns, who crushed Arkansas State on Saturday, can clinch a spot in the Sun Belt title game by beating South Alabama this Saturday. And if Navy wins the AAC and Colorado State wins the Mountain West, the Cajuns could play their way into the college football playoff.

6) Navy (7-2)

I did not expect Navy to play as well as it did against South Florida, when it rushed for 321 yards in a 28-7 run, but quarterback Blake Horvath has come back down to Earth after a incredibly hot start to the year. Unless he regains the dual-threat form he had until the Notre Dame debacle, Tulane will win easily,

7) Western Kentucky (7-2)
8) Memphis (8-2)
9 Colorado State (6-3)
10) Jacksonville State (6-3)

None of these teams are relevant, although as I mentioned above, Tulane may need Colorado State to become relevant on Dec. 6 it it faces Boise State in the Mountain West title game. I'll throw a bone to RichRod, who needed a Hail Mary on the final play (and an OT TD after a missed extra point that followed the Hail Mary) to beat La Tech, but his team is undefeated in CUSA and plays at Western Kentucky in its regular-season finale.

Quote board: Tulane 52, Temple 6

For so much of this century, Tulane was the hapless team getting blown out by really good conference opponents who dominated every phase of the game while the Wave looked pitiful. Now Tulane is the hammer rather than the nail. The first three-and-a-half quarters today were as lopsided as almost any game I've seen, with the Wave outgaining Temple 546-74 when it kicked off after Ty Thompson's 50-yard run for its final score.

Temple's 75-yard touchdown run on the next play prevented Tulane from posting its first conference shutout since 1960 in the SEC against Vanderbilt. Oh, well.

The bottom half of the AAC is abysmal, but Tulane is clicking on all cylinders right now. I can't see Navy beating this team next Saturday in what is now pretty much a must win to reach the championship game. A Wave loss would put it in the position of needing to beat Memphis on the final weekend and have either Navy lose at East Carolina or Army lose at home to UTSA on the final weekend to make the title matchup.

Sumrall, Darian Mensah, Dickson Agu and Makhi Hughes talked after the game.

SUMRALL

"Good win, thorough in a lot of ways. Wasn't pleased with the long run at the end, but as a whole a really good game by our guys. A lot of things showed up that were really fundamental in detail that made us successful. Happy to get the win on homecoming. It was a great crowd. The students showed out big time. The fans did a great job showing up to support our team. I'm very grateful that so many people came back. I went on my Friday run yesterday after our practice, which is what I always do on Friday, and I felt like there were more people on campus than I've ever seen here, which is really cool to see all the alumni back and all the fans back on campus, 10th year anniversary of Yulman, just a fun environment and what college football is supposed to be all about, so I'm very grateful for our fan base being here today and supporting our team. We can't be as good as we can be without their support."

On rushing for 327 yards with five TDs:

"If you run for over 300 you should win. We fumbled the ball at the end (Trey Cornist). I wasn't real pleased with that, but 52 carries for 327. A lot of guys got in the act, but Makhi, the usual for him. Just a pedestrian day of 153 yards, 8 yards a carry. Ty Thompson. Trey had the fumble but he was really rushing it well until the fumble, but a lot of guys got in the act. A really successful day on the ground."

On first drive setting the tone for dominance:

"Yeah, they were kind of aggravating us a little bit with some things they were doing on our offense (Tulane punted on back-to-back possessions after its opening-drive TD). They did some nice things, brought a couple of edge pressures, kind of did some things that were different than they had shown on tape. They were coming off a bye week, so we knew they would bust out some looks that we hadn't quite seen as much of. Early in the game a couple of things stalled out on us. They did a good job of throwing us a changeup or a curveball if you well. It wasn't the norm the way they were setting their fronts. Credit them to finding a way to be aggravating with how they were presenting their defense early in the game. We didn't handle it great initially, but we settled it in."

On Shazz Preston's first career catch being a 53-yard TD when he almost ran into Bryce Bohanon on routes that went to similar places:

"They were trying to run the right route, but it wasn't timed up and it wasn't quite as clean as it should have been. There were definitely two guys closer in proximity than they should be. Just like we drew it up--touchdown. But very happy for Shazz. Extremely long layoff after he came off the injury this summer. He hadn't been in the action a ton. He was kind of back at North Texas but didn't really practice enough during the week to merit playing him. Got in a few snaps against Charlotte. Had the one we were trying to target him against Charlotte, but the throw just wasn't there, and then for him to get that catch today and score a touchdown, I'm just so pleased and happy for the young man. He transferred here, but he hadn't ever really played a lot (at Alabama). He got his first college game action this year. This is his first catch, first touchdown, all those things. I'm happy for him to get that, and he's got to keep growing. We need a lot of those guys in that room to step up."

On Patrick Durkin at kicker and Caleb Thomas starting:

"Patrick first. He's been out with an injury and coming back. During the summer we felt like he had been really strong, and we just wanted to see him go. He was ready for game action, and he was the strongest and most consistent guy through the week. Every job is earned. We love Jacob Barnes and Ethan Head. Those guys have done a great job. Jacob's handled the extra points and field goals a lot this year. Head's handled the kickoffs all year. But Durk is available, and we wanted to see the leg, wanted to see him swing, so he kicked off a few times (all touchbacks) and handled all the extra points and field goals. We felt like we needed to see what we had in him. We'd seen some good things in the summer and just wanted to give him an opportunity.

"And then Caleb Thomas is an unsung hero of our team. He's the sixth O-lineman. He's really an interior player at center or guard and he's played some jumbo tight end. He does not start. He's a senior who's been through a lot here. He's played over a thousand snaps. He's going to be really successful in life. He's like an ultimate Tulane guy. He's going to run somebody's company one day and do really well and probably be like the guy that hires and fires me. He's a stud, but he is such a great teammate, such a great locker room guy. He's just a fun guy to be around, and our team loves him, so he was a captain today and he got to stat today for homecoming because we felt like that was the right thing to do and he'd earned it. Just really happy for him and couldn't be more grateful for his contributions to this program, going to back to way before us getting. here as a staff."

On Navy up next:

"They're all big. Every game's big. There's only 12 of them. But this one obviously has some added value because of what's on the line. It's a handful, man. Defending any kind of quarterback run, option type stuff. They're different than Army. We played Army the last two years when we were at Troy. Navy's different in how they do some things and their pass game's a little different. Their quarterback is a neat player, a special player. They are a really good team, so going on the road up there and finding a way to get a win is going to be a real challenge. I told our guys we usually have a 24-hour rule to enjoy the game or stew over the game if it doesn't go your way. We've got until midnight tonight. I think it was Cinderalla at midnight, so after midnight this one's gone. We have to get to the next one real fast because it's going to take a lot of work for us to get prepared with what they do. They're really good defensively, too. They're well coached. Their staff does a great job. I've got a lot of respect for them."

On team being locked in today despite Navy coming up:

"You always worry about guys being in the moment, in the present, being where their feet are. You also always worry about teams becoming complacent. It's human nature to relax when things are going good. This team's done a pretty good job of staying process oriented, staying hungry, keeping a chip on your shoulder, understanding that you get what you earn, you're only as good as your last day or the next day. You can't look too far out in front and you can't look to the past. I tell our guys all the time if you worry about the future too much, it creates anxiety. If you worry about the past, it creates regret in your heart. Just live where you are, be where you are. We've got to be really good in every moment preparing this week for what I think is a top 25, top 30 team for sure with the way they play.. When they're executing at all levels, they've been a problem for a lot of people, so we have a workout ahead of us for sure."

On holding Temple to five first downs:

"We had a good number of 3 and outs, didn't allow a whole lot of extended drives. Holding a team to 6 points is really good. We gave up a 75-yard run, which really pisses me off. Like I'm just still angry about that. They are going to get a run, but we've got 11 guys on the field and nobody can go make a tackle? We played with rotten effort on that play, so the defense, if they think they'e got it all figured out, they are going to watch that play Monday. If they want to feel like they did something today, they'll realize real fast that wasn't good enough. Sorry, I'm a little angry about that play."

On missing first conference shutout in 64 years:

"I wanted.a shutout, but I just don't like bad football plays, and that was a really bad play. We have a guy unblocked in the backfield that could have made the play. He doesn't make it, OK. We have three guys that were just flat loafing on the play in pursuit of the ball. That makes me want to throw something. It was frustrating."

Two super lightweight boxers go head-to-head in “The Island of Enchantment” on Saturday (Nov. 9): Puerto Rican Subriel “El Orgullo de Maternillo” Matias (20-2-0) battles Mexican boxer Roberto “Rifle” Ramirez (26-3-1) in a highly anticipated Tainos vs. Aztecas match. The bout is scheduled for 10 rounds

Although Fresh Productions Boxing has yet to announce each fighter’s walkout music for the main event of Tainos vs. Aztecas, the fighters usually go out to the ring to the same songs during their matches. Subriel Matias typically walks out to “Baby Father” by Puerto Rican rapper Yovngchimi, so this song will likely make an appearance during the boxing event. However, Roberto Ramirez’s ring walk music is unknown.

On Friday afternoon, Subriel Matias (20-2, 20 KOs) and Roberto Ramirez (26-3-1, 19 KOs) came right at the junior welterweight limit of 140 pounds making their main event official tomorrow night on PPV.com. The event will be hosted by Fresh Productions and take place at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. This will mark Matias’ first fight since losing his IBF title in June against Liam Paro. His opponent, Ramirez, is ready to insert his name into title contention if he can get past Matias on Saturday night. The oddsmakers have Matias as the heavy favorite but in boxing, anything can happen as we’ve often seen.

Junior welterweights Subriel Matias and Roberto Ramirez both weighed in at 140lbs on Friday, landing on the junior welterweight limit for Saturday’s main event at Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico’s former world champion Matias (20-2, 20 KOs) looks to get back in the win column, after he lost his IBF 140 lbs title by unanimous decision against Liam Paro in June. San Diego-based Mexican Ramirez (26-3-1, 19 KOs) defeated Rodolfo Flores Moreno via seventh-round TKO last December and secured his third straight victory.

In the co-feature, bantamweight Jeyvier Cintron weighed in at 118lbs, while Rashib Martinez came in a little over a pound over the contracted weight limit at 119.2lbs. Cintron, 29, from Puerto Rico, stands at 12-1 (9 KOs) and is pursuing his second win of 2024 after a lengthy hiatus following a New Year’s Eve loss to former titleholder Kazuto Ioka at junior bantamweight. Martinez, 27, of Mexico, enters on a three-fight win streak. Only Cintron is eligible for the secondary title on the line.

The world’s largest martial arts organization is bringing ONE 169: Malykhin vs. Reug Reug to Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, and the card is topped by a trio must-see World Title fights.

In the main event, undefeated three-division king Anatoly Malykhin will defend his ONE Heavyweight MMA World Title against bruising Senegalese Wrestling Champion “Reug Reug” Oumar Kane.

There haven’t been many fighters who have found more success in ONE Championship than Anatoly Malykhin. The three-division MMA world champion now looks to continue his reign of terror by taking out Senegalese powerhouse ‘Reug Reug’ in the ONE 169 main event.

As for the co-main event, Rodtang returns to potentially extend his flyweight Muay Thai title reign. ‘The Iron Man’ will face a familiar opponent, as Jacob Smith has received a rematch. They first fought in May 2022, with Rodtang securing a dominant unanimous decision win. However, Rodtang missed weight, and was stripped of his belt, so only Smith is eligible to win the title.
