Only four teams remain at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship, with the heavy hitters set to battle it out in the semifinals on Saturday, with the hopes of advancing to the gold medal game.
Sweden came into the tournaments as a significant favorite with a talented roster. They were able to flex their muscle in the group stage, going undefeated to win Group B. However, they did have some issues with Latvia in the quarterfinals, almost squandering a 3-0 lead, but Tre Kronor hung on to win, advancing to the semifinals for the fourth straight tournament.
Sweden led the way in the group stage, winning all four games by at least two goals, and stands as the favorite as the top eight teams move into bracket play in Ottawa. Red Wings 2023 draft pick Axel Sandin Pellikka tallied eight points (four goals, four assists) in group play.
The tournament would end on a questionable call with just over two minutes left to play in a tied quarterfinal, but some would argue that they never should've gotten to the point of living and dying by a controversial call on home ice. For a second straight year, Team Canada fell short to Czechia in the quarterfinals and will leave empty-handed.
