George Russell put Mercedes on pole for the Las Vegas Grand Prix on Friday as Max Verstappen moved a step closer to a fourth successive Formula One title by qualifying ahead of Lando Norris.
While the driver title isn't much of a competition at this point, the constructor title is. McLaren currently leads with 593 points, but Ferrari isn't far back with 557. Red Bull remains in the hunt as well with 544 points. Mercedes is locked into fourth and Aston Martin likely has a grip on fifth, but the battle for sixth is tight as well, with Alpine, Haas, and RB all within five points.
Pierre Gasly took a surprise third for Alpine, one place ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.
Lando Norris must outscore Max Verstappen by at least three points to extend the title battle to the penultimate race in Qatar, but the British driver will start one place behind the Dutchman in sixth
