His team went undefeated in the regular season before losing 38-0 in the second round of the state playoffs in a surprising upset as the No. 2-ranked team in Class 6A. As a sophomore he listed Alabama, Michigan State and Cincinnati as his top three choices, but he did not end up receiving offers from any of them.
