First day of practice

The first full preseason practice today is not open to reporters, but tomorrow's will be before a zoom conference call with Fritz and selected players.

As you all know, I have offered blanket coverage of Tulane's preseason camp every year I have run this site and I intend to do it again this year if possible, but other than tomorrow, this week will be difficult. My father-in-law died of coronavirus in March, and his long-delayed funeral will be Friday. Relatives are in town and there is a lot going on this week.

By Monday, I will be back to normal, although it is unclear what daily access will look like in the coronavirus era.

Commitment No. 13

It's Kriston Esnard, the No. 4 ranked placekicker in the country according to Kohl's Kicking. Tulane was the only school to offer him a scholarship, but he sounds like a promising prospect.

I have to create a profile for him at Rivals, something that was commonplace under Toledo and CJ but is very rare under Fritz.

Esnard is from Decatur High in Georgia.

Recruiting with Spring football at JUCOs and some high schools

Tulane has benefited in recent years from recruiting the junior colleges. While Jabril Clewis, Jonathan Banks, and Dominique Briggs were never superstars, they started a lot of games for the Wave. There are probably others I have overlooked. Nick Anderson and the Watts twins are our latest “finds” from the Juco ranks and their overall contributions are yet to be finalized. For 2021, we’ve got one Juco commitment so far in Offensive Lineman, Hayden Shook, but JC recruiting has a different “twist” this year.

Junior Colleges have reportedly moved their season to the spring. So, what does that mean? First, it means the four year schools will not be able to see JC players perform prior to the early signing period in December or the final signing period in February. Will we sign JUCO’s based on a single year of tape without seeing them in their sophomore year? If we’ve offered and they’ve committed, probably. But will schools hold off on offering and retain a couple of recruiting slots to sign players after their spring seasons? Or, if a guy like Shook is truly committed to the Wave and that commitment is mutual, will he sign in December, forego his second season in junior college and enter Tulane with four years remaining to play three (ie. as a “true” Sophomore rather than a “true” Junior)?

Similar questions can be asked about high school seniors in states that have already moved football to the spring (like where I live in Virginia). Billy Wiles, our QB commit from Virginia, will not play his senior year until after signing day. Does that change anything? What if he planned to graduate and attend Tulane in the Spring to get a “head start?” (and I have no indication that is/was his plan) How will spring football affect his plans? Every year, relative unknown players rise significantly in the ranks based on their senior seasons. Will teams hold slots for such until after spring football?

Like everything else in our lives, Covid 19 is changing how we look at things, even football recruiting. Fortunately, I think our coaches are better prepared to handle such a changed environment than most.

A couple of recruiting notes

One thing I left out of the Iverson Celestine feature was his closeness to Jalen McCleskey, who played against his older brother. He said McCleskey played a key role in his decision to commit to Tulane.

Also, Kolby Phillips' commitment appears to be very shaky, and that may be an understatement. He was great when I talked to him on the phone earlier this month, but he told someone in Memphis yesterday he was still committed to Tulane but 100-percent open to continuing his recruitment, which is a contradiction in terms. He also has taken down the tweet where he committed to Tulane.

4-star commitment

Ty Keyes, a QB from Taylorsville, Mississippi, announced his commitment to Tulane today. He had offers from Auburn, Oregon, Ole Miss and Mississippi State among others. Rivals rates him the No. 15 pro-style QB in the country and the No. 5 overall prospect in Mississippi.

The only 4-star signee for the Wave in Rivals' current form, which started in 2002, was Darion Monroe in 2012

AAC roundtable: which team will fall the farthest

Thank goodness for variety, but it's tough for me to see why everyone did not pick Navy. Instead, there was plenty of variety, with Tulane making an appearance along with Memphis, SMU and Temple. There also is one mistaken duplication, so it is unclear who one person picked.

I don't know. Navy went 11-2 with a transcendent performance from Malcolm Perry and is one year removed from a 4-9 season when it had QB issues. My obvious choice was the right choice.

Juan Monjarres

On reviewing the roster I notice Juan Monjarres is no longer listed. I don't know if that's new news, but it was news to me. I know he's had some significant injury issues but wasn't aware of how bad they might be. If the official roster is correct and I didn't simply miss something, this is truly sad. The kid came to Tulane with a world of potential and in his brief appearances on the field seemed to be fulfilling that potential. Hopefully, he'll be back at some point. Regardless, I wish him all the best.

ACC roundtable: which team will make the biggest turnaround

I went for the obvious team--Houston--as did most of the panelists. I considered Tulsa, which was much better than its 4-8 record last year, but there's something wrong with the entire operation there and the coaching staff could be on its way out. Houston likely would have gone to a bowl if D'Eriq King had not quit after four games.

Roster update

The only two players missing from the recent roster update are Kyle Meyers and Trace Oldner, who made no impact as a freshman on the offensive line.

There also are three new walk-ons.

1) WR Reed Rutkowski (6-0, 175), Loyola Academy (Ill)

Background: He was on a state championship team that was rated the best in Illinois in 2018 but did not have significant stats as a junior or a senior as far as I can determine.

2) CB Rishi Rattan (5-10, 170), Bishop Miege (Kan.)

Background: While he was there, his school won four consecutive Class 4A state championships with no playoff game closer than 29 points, which is why some states like Louisiana split the private and public schools. He had eight interceptions as a junior and received lower-level offers from Drake and Butler.

3) Ethan Marcus (6-2, 290), Lynbrook (Long Island, N.Y.).

Background: Two-year starter who also played lacrosse and basketball.

AAC roundtable: Defensive player of the year

Quite frankly, I don't have a clue who will win the award, which usually goes to the guy who posts the best numbers rather than the best player (although Quincy Roche was both last year), and offenses game plan to go away from the best defenders.

I guess I can be criticized for not mentioning Patrick Johnson, who figures to have a big senior year if he stays healthy.

Corey Dauphine done with torn Achilles

I saw this on the GoTula message board, so I signed up for an Instagram account for the first time just to see the news with my own eyes. Dauphine confirmed on Instagram he had a torn Achilles, ending his college career.

While this stinks for him and hurts Tulane, I expect Tyjae Spears to have a breakout year. I believe, though it has not been proven yet, that he is the best all-around back of the Fritz era. Assuming everyone else stays healthy, having Spears, Amare Jones, Cameron Carroll, Stephon Huderson and Ygenio Booker still qualifies as a huge strength.

Tulane will miss Dauphine's breakaway ability, though. It's what made him special and separated him from other backs. He never was consistent enough to get the carries his ability suggested, but he truly was a threat to go the distance every time he carried.
