Tulane is not doing interviews or having an open practice today or tomorrow, which I believe will be an off day, but I cleared up some special teams stuff after practice yesterday. Darian Mensah continued to take the first-team reps, and Ty Thompson was in next.

JON SUMRALL

On run-through practice:

"I thought it was good. We had 20 minutes of O/D, 20 minutes of kicking and 20 (more) minutes of O/D, full speed, helmets, spiders. No contact, really a lot of situational stuff. This is our Friday practice today, what we'll do every day before the game. It's obviously Wednesday, not Friday, but for the game week it's Friday. I like the work we got. A lot of this is about working out the kinks so next week I'm not losing my mind in practice because I've only got like a page full of notes and things we've got to do to clean some of the stuff up. It's for the coaches and the players so that next week we know what to do. Tomorrow (Thursday) we'll come out and do a mock game. It will be every situation, and some of them won't come up but every five years. Take a safety in the game. End of game don't want to score a touchdown, first down, go down for your running backs. There are times you don't want to score a touchdown, and you have to work that because it's not natural, so end of game stuff we'll work on a lot of that stuff tomorrow and just fine tune some things. A lot of it's for the coaches. Some of it's for the players. Some of it is for all of us."

On Tulane running backs practicing the fall-down to avoid scoring a TD in Wednesday's practice and Shaadie Clayton-Johnson sliding down fast and hard just before the goal line:

"It's so unnatural. Even in the huddle when you say down-down and then you give the play, it's like hang on, I'm not supposed to score? Because if there's 30 seconds left on the clock and you're up by 1 and then have no timeouts, you don't want to score because some crazy stuff could happen. It's happened a lot. I've seen a lot of crazy things happen. Some of them I've been a part of."

On kicker and kickoff specialist competition:

"Field goals we'll go Jacob Barnes. I like the two youngsters. And then the two youngsters are probably going to alternate kicks for game 1. Mac (special teams coach) Greg McMahon and G Hud (special teams analyst Gunner Hudspeth) met yesterday and looked at all the numbers. Both of them are booming it pretty good, so we're going to let them both roll and we may game 1 just alternate kickoffs. They both kick it deep. They both have good hang. I like where both those guys are. Both of them have done a nice job with field goal. It's nice to not have to throw them in the fire of kicking a game field goal, but I feel confident in them if we have to. You'll see both of them on game 1 in kickoff."

On his emphasis on special teams:

"I've been a special teams coordinator, so I probably naturally talk about it a lot. There's a lot of hidden yardage there within a game. We probably spend as much time on it as anybody in the country because it will win you or lose you a game faster than anything. Most games are lost, not won, and the coverage teams in particular--punt and kickoff cover--you've got to be really detailed and be good, and the kickoff and field goal guys are new. The punt returners and kickoff returners are new, so there's been a decent amount of turnover in those areas. Other than snapper and punter, everybody's new."

On kickoff returners:

"As of right now, Shaadie's No. 1 if we played a game tomorrow. Dontae (Fleming)'s No. 2. I like Rayshawn Pleasant. I like (Bryce) Bohanon). Jamauri McClure back there I kind of like. There's some things that kind of scare me with putting a freshman back there, but I like his explosiveness and his physicality when he hits it. And then punt returner, the same type guys. Dontae, Mario (Williams), Bryce, Yul (Yulkeith Brown)'s worked it some. I would guess Dontae may take the first one, but if we played tomorrow, Dontae probably would take the first one."

On Clayton-Johnson kickoff returning ability:

"He and Rayshawn both have shown a knack for seeing it. A lot of times on kickoff returns running backs have a good feel for it because its similar. There's a lot of things coming at you in front of you, and that's similar playing running back. Shaadie catches the ball well. That's one thing he does on offense that doesn't get talked about enough (he has not been reading my stuff) is he could really if he had to go play receiver in a pinch, so I feel comfortable with him back there returning kickoff. I think we've got some good stuff dialed up to maybe help those guys get some good returns."

DAN ROUSHAR

On offensive line experience:

"It's been really good and yet there's been challenges with just getting guys to be comfortable playing next to each other. I would say the addition of Derrick Graham has been a super positive for us. He’s got a really high football I.Q. He’s played a lot of snaps. He played in the Troy system. The language is a little bit different, but much of what we’re doing is very similar to what he did. He’s really had a good camp. Getting Vinny in there has been a big part of what we've done, and certainly having Caleb (Thomas) in a position to back him up and rotate in there, those guys have done a really good job as well. Vinny has a really high football I.Q. as well. He's got a great passion for it. He leads and directs very well, and Caleb's done all the same things. And then it's getting Rashad (Green) back here the last couple weeks. He missed a lot of time in the spring (all of it) due to the medical situation he was in (labrum surgery), but I've seen a lot of grown in the last couple practices and expect him to be back to full form here shortly, so I'm excited about that group going out there together."

On importance of getting Graham:

"it was big. I’ve been so impressed with his transition. He’s been really willing to adapt to techniques and things we’re trying to get done in our communication. He's picked it up from the very beginning. He was here the entire summer, so that helped him grow in the system, but getting him was big because Trey was really playing well for us and it was very unfortunate (his season-ending knee injury near the end of spring). I expect him to make a full recovery, and next year he's going to be a heck of a player."

On young backups:

"Its really an interesting room. We have I would consider four veterans, guys that are seniors playing in what would be their last year. Derrick has the ability to have another year, so you have all that experience there, and then there's just a significant drop. It goes to all either true or redshirt freshmen in this room. It's a very talented group, but like young kids, every day is a new learning experience for them, and I've seen a lot of growth with them. It's concerning because here we are, a week out from playing the first game, and they're still freshmen. You don't know what they're going to do in a live situation until they are put out there, but I like the group a lot. It's very talented as a group. There's a bright, bright future with this group."

On breaking down the pecking order among the backups:

"Darion (Reed) and Dom Steward have been getting reps on the right side, and Reese Baker, a true freshman, has been backing up at the left tackle. We have some other players we can expand in that role if we have to, but right now for continuity and consistency, lining up at the same position practice after practice you can start to see improvement. It's really challenging for a player to go from left to right. That's not an easy thing. Communication's different. Technique's different. There's a lot of things that go into that."

On Caleb Thomas:

"He would go in first at center or guard, and quite frankly he's had the type of camp that I consider him a starter. He'll play and he'll contribute. We're going to need every one of those guys, and he's had an outstanding camp. He's really done a great job."

On Landry Cannon and Jayce Mitchell:

"Landry's growing. I would say Jayce is like a lot of the freshmen. Every day you see some improvement. Probably not going to press him into action yet, but he continues to grow. Elijah Baker has a chance to contribute as a true freshman, as does Reece, and them Dom Steward, the nice thing is we got him here last spring, so he's familiar with what we're doing and he's going to have a bright future as well."

Update: Monday, Aug. 19 and Tuesday, Aug. 20

Darian Mensah continues to get the majority of the reps with the first unit at Tulane's practices, and despite Jon Sumrall's explanation that they are making up for lost time to balance it out because he received no first-team reps earlier in the preseason, I think Mensah will start against Southeastern next Thursday. Sumrall said today he would make no announcement before the game and he believes all three quarterbacks will have to win a game for Tulane at some point this year, and I agree the only way to find out which one is best is to play them. But Mensah, most likely in my eyes, will get the first shot.

They had a full practice yesterday and a very light walk-through today with no helmets, representing the Wednesday and Thursday of a normal game week, and I feel confident in what the depth chart will look like for the opener. Here it is:

QUARTERBACK

1) Mensah
2) either Kai Horton or Ty Thompson

Comment: Mensah has simply looked better than the other two in the last two weeks, but he will have to prove he can play at the same level in games. There is no way to know if he will at this point, but his makeup is ideal.

RUNNING BACK

1) Makhi Hughes
2) Arnold Barnes
3) Shaadie Clayton-Johnson
4) Jamauri McClure

Comment: Hughes is a lock, and I think the rest will enter in the way I just ordered it. Performance will determine the pecking order from there. Sumrall talked about having a package for McClure becuase he is not ready to handle the whole offense. That brings to mind the disastrous packages CJ used for players that never worked, but Sumrall is an infinitely better coach. if McClure goes where he is supposed to and holds on to the ball, he is the second-most talented back on the roster in my opinion.

WIDE RECEIVER

Starters: Mario Williams, Yulkeith Brown and Dontae Fleming
Backups: Bryce Bohanon, Shaun Nicholas and Sidney Mbanasor
Next: Zycarl Lewis, Khai Prean and Garrett Mmahat

Comment: The first three are locks, with Fleming the inside guy and the other two on the outside when they line up on opposite sides of the field. The picture is still not totally set behind them, although Bohanon, who is lining up in the slot, is the clear No. 4. Lewis has come on in the past week, but he is a true freshman and I'm not sure if he is ready. Nicholas, who practiced in the spring, and Mbanasor, a Utah transfer, have more experience. I've always been partial to Mmahat among Tulane's walk-ons, but his long-shot bid was hurt by a drop in the end zone on Monday. Shazz Preston (hamstring) almost certainly will not play in the opener, although he not been officially ruled out. I do not expect Phat Watts (ankle) to play, either.

TIGHT END

1) Alex Bauman
2) Anthony Miller (because Reggie Brown is injured)
3) Josh Goines

Comment: I forgot to ask about Brown's status the past two days. He was having a good camp before getting injured and would be the No. 2 guy if healthy--maybe even No. 1 in blocking sets. Miller has made some plays the past the past two weeks. Tulane uses multiple tight end sets at times, so Bauman will have company.

OFFENSIVE LINE

Starters: LT Derrick Graham, LG Shadre Hurst, C Vincent Murphy, RG Josh Remetich, RT Rashad Green
Backups: LT Rashad Baker, LG Landry Cannon, C Caleb Thomas, RG Jayce Mitchell, RT Darion Reed

Comment: The starters are set in stone. Thomas would be the first guy off the bench at center or guard, with Cannon likely next at guard. I'm not clear about the backup tackles. My guess is they would go in as needed at the spot they have practiced the most since they are so young.

DEFENSIVE LINE

Starters: Terrell Allen at bandit, Patrick Jenkins at DT, Eric Hicks at NT and Adin Huntington at DE
Backups: Matthew Fobbs-White at bandit, Kam Hamilton at DT, Adonis Frlioux at NT, Gerrod Henderson at DE
Also in picture: Angelo Anderson and DeShaun Batiste at DE, Elijah Champaigne at DT, Michael Lunz at bandit

Comment: This is a talented, deep group at three of the four spots. Even Angelo Anderson has come on in camp, and Friloux has looked closer to his form in 2021 though not quite all the way back. I am not so sure about bandit, where no one has really stepped up.

LINEBACKER

Starters: Tyler Grubbs and Sam Howard
Backups: Chris Rodgers and Dickson Agu
Also competing: Makai Williams

Comment: Chris Rodgers is a playmaker, as are Grubbs and Howard. Tulane is equipped to survive the loss of Jesus Machado for at least most of the season and likely all of it.

NICKELBACK (spear)

1) Caleb Ransaw
2) Javion White or Jayden Lewis or Shi'Keem Laister

Comment: Ransaw will be an All-AAC performer. The two freshmen behind him are in a close batter, although White, who unlike Lewis did not arrive for the spring semester, has received the most reps with the second team. Laister is used most often in the role of a blitzer off the edge when he plays that spot.

CORNERBACK

Starters: Micah Robinson and Johnathan Edwards
Backups: Rayshawn Pleasant and Jaheim Johnson
Also in running: Rishi Rattan and Lu Tillery

Comment: I really like Robinson as a ball hawk, and Edwards is solid. Pleasant has looked sharp, too. Rattan has slipped down the depth chart, but his tackle of Mario Williams for a 5-yard loss in the scrimmage showed he is no standard walk-on.

SAFETY

Starters: Jalen Geiger at SS, Bailey Despanie at FS
Backups: Joshua Moore at SS, Kevin Adams at FS
Also in picture: Jack Tchienchou

Comment: Tchienchou was getting some starter reps alternating with Geiger before a couple of injuries set him back in camp. The starters are locked in now, but Adams has been ultra impressive.

KICKER

1) Jacob Barnes
2) Ethan Head or Patrick Durkin

Comment: Barnes has not looked great in camp, but he has proven he can do it in games despite not having anywhere near as strong a leg as the two walk-ons. I have no idea which of the two will win the kickoff job--both send it to the end zone every time--but I will see if I can find out tomorrow.

PUNTER

1) Will Karoll
2) Brice Busch

Comment: Karoll needs to be more consistent than last year but has no real competition.

HOLDER

1) Busch for Barnes, a left-footer, and Karoll for the two walk-ons, who are right-footed.

LONG SNAPPER

2) Mario Williams or Bohanon

Comment: Williams has started showing the form at receiver that made him a big-time recruit and impact player at USC, but his hands concern me in this role. Fleming has caught everything in camp but he muffed a punt in the bowl game. A spot to watch.

KICKOFF RETURNER

1) Clayton-Johnson and Fleming

Comment: Clayton-Johnson looks the most natural to me, which is unusual because I have a bias toward receivers over running backs in this role. I'll never forget watching Rob Kelley run straight to first contact over and over in 2011, but Clayton-Johnson is nothing like him.

Update: Saturday, Aug. 17

Today was scout-team day, that annual moment when it becomes clear which players are expected to have a role this year and which players will not unless injuries pile up. There were a few surprises this morning, like DeShaun Batiste, who was active in Thursday night's scrimmage, working at defensive end on the scout team. I wasn't totally shocked because Jon Sumrall's response to my question about Batiste's rise was relatively lukewarm for him, but it was still unexpected. Near the end of practice, Batiste walked over to the side of the field where the regular defense was practicing, but he did not get any reps. At that point, Elijah Champaigne replaced him on the scout team, and that was a bit unexpected, too.

The other surprise, and this was probably the biggest, was Makai Williams on the scout team at linebacker. Both Willie Fritz last year and Sumrall this year have sung his praises, but he has fallen to third string during camp behind first-teamers Tyler Grubbs and Sam Howard and second-teamers Chris Rodgers (a heck of a player in my book) and Dickson Agu. Sumrall has talked about using five linebackers this year, so Williams still could get into the mix, but he is not there at the moment. He practiced with Jean Claude Joseph.

The biggest notable on the scout team offense was Dominic Stwward, who got plenty of time on the No. 1 offensive line due to injuries after enrolling in January. As noted in my reports earlier this week, he had slipped off the second-team offensive line. He practiced with Gabe Fortson, who is back from injury, and fellow freshmen Jayce Mitchell and Tristan Fortenberry on the scout team along with some walk-ons. Totally expectedly, Trey Cornist was on the scout team as well after not doing anything of note in camp and never been mentioned by Sumrall when he discussed running back depth. Kellen Tasby was the quarterback. All of the other skill-position players were walk-ons.

Darian Mensah continued to take the first reps with the No. 1 offense, but Sumrall said it did not mean he was the frontrunner to win the job. They are simply making up for lost time after he never got those reps earlier in camp when it was supposed to be a two-man race between Kai Horton and Ty Thompson. Sumrall had a lot to say today about the quarterbacks, some of it without being asked directly and some of it off of specific questions. He started by talking about the opening drive in Thursday night's scrimmage.

"Should have finished the first drive, and on the one where we didn't make the catch to score the touchdown, we didn't run the right route (Mario Williams). If we run the right route, it makes it a little easier to make the catch. So often the quarterback position is a heck of lot easier to play well when the receivers do the right thing and the O-line does the right thing and the backs do the right thing. I actually thought all three of the quarterbacks did some good things in the flow of the game, especially when everybody around them was doing the right thing."

I asked him about bad things happening around Horton in the scrimmage that had nothing to do with him.

"Yeah. No different than Mensah went with the young group maybe the week before and bad things happened. Kai went this week and bad things are going to happen. It's the nature of the deal. What stinks is when you're trying to get those quarterbacks the right amount of reps, but yet they all can't go with the 1 O-line. That's the way it is. Therefore you have to kind of mix and match when they go with the 1s, They've all gotten plenty of action with the 1s, really Kai and Ty have gotten plenty of action with the 1s. Mensah's sort of been thrust in that action more the last week. That's why we're giving him a lion's share of those reps because he's done good enough things that I want to see him a little bit more with the big guys. When you do it a week ago today with the young group, and yes, you've got some things gong around you that aren't perfect or clean and you still lead the offense to good things, it makes you go, OK, what can you do with the best players. Now the other side has the best players, too, and the windows get tighter and the processes happen faster and everything speeds up. All three quarterbacks did some OK things. It was probably the best day we've had even though the offense didn't have great production of the quarterbacks doing what they are supposed to do for the most part.

Asked about the depth chart in general, he had this to say.

"The depth chart is written in sand forever. You get what you earn. You can be the starter in week 1, and I told all the quarterbacks, too, just because you start week 1 doesn't mean you start week 1 doesn't mean you start week 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11. The guy that starts week 1, what will determine whether he starts week 2 is does he play well and prepare well and lead well. Every position's that way."

He then was asked another question about the quarterback competition and how the QBs were handling it.

"Mike Tannenbaum talked to our team in the spring about being a force multiplier. To me what that means is regardless of the situation, make everybody else around you better. When something is going great, make people people, and when something's not going great, you still make them better. There's gong to be adversity at that position. I don't care how good you play, you are going to have a mistake here and there. I don't know how many quarterbacks have ever played without throwing an interception, so there are going to be things that don't go the right way and for me it's so much about how do you respond to those things that don't go well. I like where that competition's at. They are doing some things good. I'll be very blunt. Two weeks ago it was hard because nobody was elevating. Now it's getting harder as the coach because I see enough of them elevating a little to where I think, OK, Kai is protecting the ball better than he ever has recently and trying to play within the system a little bit better. Ty has done some things better the last few days. He had his best week last week. They have gotten better, but so has Mensah, who has really surged. When I say surged, we're throwing him out there and he looks like a really confident, calm player that's got more experience than he really does. They've all responded well. I'm going to challenge them to keep doing that. It's making the decision on who goes out first a little bit harder because they all have responded properly. I think we'll be fine. Somebody's got to go out and take the first snap, and expect those two guys to support that guy and be ready when their number's called.

"I can see a situation where all three will be needed this year. It may be in game 1. I don't know yet, so we just have to be ready. It's a little bit different in that for several years here there hasn't been a quarterback battle. I wasn't here and I could have told you Michael Pratt was going to be the starting quarterback the last couple of years. I'm not going to say it's truly like we're playing receivers where you're rotating guys, but it's more like we've got three guys and whoever shows to be the most ready by game 1 is going to be the guy that plays snap 1, game 1. I'm not going to be afraid to put another guy if we need to put another guy in. I'm also not going to try to create doubt within those guys, either, but we're going to, I don't want to say mix and match, but we're going to roll them in as we see fit that gives us the best chance ot be successful, short term and long term."

Finally, he was asked about how long a leash he would have for the starting QB.

"It's too early to say. It depends on what they do. If you take the snap and go hand it to the other team, well the leash is pretty short. If somebody throws a pick because somebody missed a block or somebody didn't run the right route, then the leash gets longer. The leash look is dependent upon what was the error. If the error was extremely self inflicted, then that leash gets stronger. If the error is caused because somebody around the quarterback did something that was wrong and didn't help him out, that's not on the quarterback. I can think of a thousand times I've seen bad plays around the quarterback that weren't the quarterback in my career. There's bad plays that are the quarterback's fault. Not all of them are the quarterback's fault."

The practice went 20 minutes longer than scheduled today and was moved back an hour, running from 9 until 11:05 with no break for the cold trucks. Vincent Murphy stayed in to take all of the reps with the first-team O-line, at least for the last 80 minutes, so the starting unit is intact.

They practiced kickoff coverage again and the coverage unit, from left to right, is Shaun Nicholas, Rayshawn Pleasant, Kevin Adams, Shi'Keem Laister, a player I missed, the kicker (it was Bobby Noel because they wanted the kicks to be returned), Dickson Agu, Michael Lunz, Mandel Eugene, Makai Williams and Jaheim Johnson. During the year, they probably are going to run a lot but not get to make a play as the kickoff sails into the end zone for a touchback.

They will practice again tomorrow morning, but I am skipping it. Sundays I don't do unless they decided to hold a scrimmage. They are planning to go the next several days and will take one mandatory day off next week with classes starting Monday.

Friday practices for the Tulane football team are going to be nothing like they were in the past, and that was clearly evident on Wednesday morning as coach Jon Sumrall gave a preview of the day-before-game sessions under him in a simulation of the short work week the Green Wave will have before facing Charlotte on Halloween, with a scrimmage tomorrow night starting at 6. Since it is still preseason came, this one ran an hour-and-a-half (including a stint in the cold trucks) nstead of the hour it will take during the season, but this was not and won't be the traditional light walk-through every team I've covered in the past has done. Citing studies that date back to Oregon under Chip Kelly, Sumrall believes players need to run the day before a game to be in optimal shape for the game, so the team had a lot of 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 non-contact football around a significant emphasis on special teams.

As promised, Darian Mensah continued to get a majority of the reps, and he led the first-team offense right down the field on his first series of 11-on-11. The drive nearly stalled in the red zone when he threw the ball away on first down and could not connect with Yulkeith Brown on a fade to the back of the end zone, but on third down he took advantage of a busted coverage to hit Indiana transfer tight end Anthony Miller for an easy touchdown in the corner of the end zone. No one was within 10 yards of Miller.

Kai Horton went in with the 2s and hit Garrett Mmahat for back-to-back completions, with Mmahat having to slide to the ground to corral the first one. On the next step, Jalen Geiger tipped a hard pass intended for Bryce Bohanon on the inside and Jayden Lewis, wearing No. 17 now, intercepted it. It was a really nice play by Geiger, who has been with the first team at strong safety all week while primary competitor Jack Tchienchou is banged up.

Mensah had another series and got picked off by Bailey Despanie on a careless floater. Despanie, the only member of the secondary who played a significant role for Tulane last year, has has an excellent camp.

Ty Thompson was next and had a completion when Shaadie Clayton-Johnson made a one-handed grab underneath without slowing down and turned it into a sizable gain. No other running back on the team could have made that play. Thompson connected with Bohanon inside, but on the next play, a handoff went awry and the ball ended up on the ground. I can't say whether Thompson was at fault or not, but he has to avoid those plays. He then got sacked on third down by Chris Rodgers, who is part of a talented rotation at linebacker along with Tyler Grubbs, Sam Howard, Makai Williams and Dickson Agu. Grubbs and probably Howard will start, but all five can play.

On a later possession, Thompson had a nice completion to Shaun Nicholas, who has been pretty quiet in camp, before getting sacked by Shi'Keem Laister. Laister has been rushing the passer a lot in camp.

Mensah, using his tight ends effectively, threw a touchdown pass to an open Alex Bauman in a red zone. Horton followed with a scoring toss to Mmahat, his favorite target today, in the corner of the end zone.

They worked extensively on punt and kickoff returns, with the pecking order at punt returner Dontae Fleming, Mario Williams and Bryce Bohanon. The No. 1 kickoff returners were Clayton-Johnson and Bohanon, while Rayshawn Pleasant and Khai Prean worked with the second team. It was not a live drill, but Pleasant took one all the way to the end zone when he found a seam. They also practiced several onside kicks with the emphasis on the return team recovering them, and there was not a single bobble.

Tight end Reggie Brown, who has been solid in camp, was out with an unspecified injury. I did not notice any other new injuries.

Terrell Allen appears to have the edge on Matthew Fobbs-White as the first-team rush end, but that's a position Sumrall specified was a close competition entering Thursday's scrimmage. Gerrod Henderson lined up with the first team at end alongside the regulars inside--Patrick Jenkins and Eric Hicks.

Vincent Murphy continued to be held out of 11-on-11 work in favor of Caleb Thomas, the lone O-line backup with a lot of playing experience. The second-team line today was Reese Baker, Landry Cannon, Elijah Baker, Jayce Mitchell and Darion Reed from left to right.

Update: Tuesday, Aug. 13

Tulane's simulation of its short week before the Halloween game at Charlotte continued today with a practice at the Saints indoor facility. Jon Sumrall, Bryce Bohanon and Khai Prean (pronounced Pre-Ann we learned today) spoke when the team returned to campus.

SUMRALL

"It was (the equivalent) of a Thursday of a game week. Our model is Thursday walk-through, Friday run-through, Saturday go play the game. It's kind of sports science stuff. Chip Kelly really was one of the first guys in football to do it at Oregon, and it kind of started at Oregon through track. A lot of track athletes run the day before an event. They don't take that day off. Your body doesn't need to be completely sedentary. We did it at Troy when I was an assistant, and we won more than 10 games twice. We did it at Kentucky when I was an assistant and had pretty good success there with it and then did it back at Troy the last two years, so it's proven to be good for how we've done things. It helps you keep your guys healthy for the long haul of the year. Where I've noticed a difference is like November typically as guys' bodies are not as beat down because of the recovery, and you get better work on a Tuesday work day because the guys know it's not Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. It's Tuesday, Wednesday. Thursday is kind of recovery. Friday we go run-through, and then we'll do some things in there like massage and cryochamber stuff that helps the guys' bodies, too."

On regimen today:

"Guys were in jerseys, but if you're an ankle tape guy, you're ankle taped, but it's more of at best a jog-through. We did 10 minutes first period was field goal and field goal block separate, and then some situational things like fire call field goal and maybe having a fake or two, you never know, and then defensively installing punt safe, substituting a returner for the DB etcetera, matching numbers, goofy formations you get, swinging gate from the field goal. That was period one. We had three different periods of offense/defense of 15 minutes that were split, kind of reviewing and cleaning up some correction stuff, and then three other special teams periods after that--a kickoff cover and a punt period, then a punt return and kickoff return period, and then at the end we did a hands and onsides (kick). We've installed it but we did it more full speed from a reaction of formation standpoint."

On what he means by run-throughs:

"Going top speed. Not very long. It will be roughly an hour, and for about 30 minutes of that, 40 minutes of that we want guys to run, and they'll run-run. If we have a 20 miles per hour guy, he may not hit 20, but he'll hit 18. He'll open it up and kind of get some blood flow going and fire on all cylinders for a little bit."

On Bryce Bohanon:

"It's funny you bring up Bryce. I sat down and had a meal yesterday with Bryce and talked to him about hey, how did you end up here, what was your recruiting process? He's from Arkansas, was a COVID recruit, so he didn't get an official visit. There are some guys that are just dependable and reliable and are low maintenance. That's Bryce. He's very steady. He's very consistent. He never has a bad day. Great teammate. Guys like being around him. He was voted leadership council by his position group. Maybe not the flashiest. You might say Mario (Williams) or Yulkeith (Brown) or Dontae (Fleming) with his catches, but Bryce is just kind of a blue collar workman mentality and brings a lot of value to our team and to that room in regards to how he does things day in and day out. I'm glad he's here. He's a great special teamer, too. Really proud of what he's doing and how he's adding value to the team."

On Khai Prean:

"Khai's physical, good stature. Him and Shazz have a similar body type. It's kind of unique. Both guys are from the same high school--thick, big-bodied guy, makes good, contested catches. Kind of hitting his stride in regard to finding his role in the system and learning how to do things, but I've been pleased with him. When he first got here in June, he was extremely out of shape. The first run, I was like all right, this dude's not ready. He's had a good summer. He's trimmed it up the whole time. We'll see. He's the kind of guy I can see his role growing as the season goes depending on how he prepares, but he's got a good chance. He's a good kid. Obviously a productive player in high school, went to LSU and now just trying to find his lane here and where he fits in the fold."

BOHANON

On his comfort level:

"I feel really comfortable. Coach Sumrall has come in and made us feel really good and provided his own little details and his core values on to the team, and I think everybody has picked up on that really well and it just has brought everybody together."

On preseason camp leading to bigger role for him and what he envisions it will be:

"Whatever the team needs me to do. If that's blocking, catching the ball, I'm willing to do it. I feel like we're all ready in the wide receiver room to go and put on a show."

On if he was frustrated with lack of playing time in past:

"I wouldn't say frustration. I was just waiting my turn. We've had some great guys in front of me. Quan, Phat's been a great help for me, so I've just been able to learn from them mainly and just hopefully I can take what the've taught me on to the field and be able to showcase what I can do."

On best strength:

"Probably just blocking and helping my teammates our. I want to win, so whatever that takes to win, I'm willing to do that."

On wide receivers:

"We are going to be electric this year. We've got some guys that can really go, so I'm looking forward to all of us getting out there, making plays and just celebrating with each other."

On Fleming's one-handed catch Monday:

"That was amazing. Dontae has worked so hard this summer just to get his body right and showcase what he can do, and you guys saw it. He can go."

On newcomers meshing with returning players:


"We meshed together real well. Coach Carter (Sheridan) is a great coach. He was here with us last year, too, so it wasn't anything that really was new. It just mainly was getting everybody together and buy in to what they're coaching us to do, and everybody's done that."

On Sheridan coaching wideouts this year:

"It's great. Coach Carter knows so much. He's a tactician. He's really gotten me to where I've gotten to so far because of what he's taught me and his techniques he's teaching all of us really."

Update: Monday, Aug. 12

Monday morning was by far the feistiest practice of the preseason, with at least five fights between offensive and defensive players finally prompting Jon Sumrall to stop the workout and force everyone to run a series of short sprints as a disciplinary measure near the end of the workout. They went back out to have one final red zone sequence, and when Darian Mensah (more on him in a second) fired a strike to Sidney Mbanasor over the middle in the end zone, barely beating cornerback E'Zaiah Shine. Mbanasor, whose helmet came off at the end of the play, celebrated by spiking the ball into the wall behind the end zone. Those two had had a dust-up earlier. but Mbanasor and the offense got the last laugh, with the whistle blowing to signify the end of practice seconds later. Sumrall lectured the team on fighting in his post-practice address on the field, saying they should channel their intensity into big plays like wide receiver Dontae Fleming (more on that in a second, too), but he was not overly upset.

"It wasn't like what happened at Appalachian State, where a guy grabbed a helmet (a defensive lineman took off an offensive lineman's helmet and smashed him in the head with hit)," Sumrall said. "We haven't had any of that. That's scary. I like the enthusiasm. I'd much rather have to say, 'whoa, whoa, whoa' than 'giddyup.' We've got to be a little smarter with how we compete with each other and recognize we all play for the same team. We all play for Tulane. We have to protect our team, but it was enthusiastic and it was charged and it was competitive. Coming off a Saturday scrimmage with yesterday a day off and full gear today, as a coach you're worried about are they going to bring it? They brought it. Now we just got to get them to bring it with the confines of the rules, but I liked the energy for sure."

Practice No. 11 was a heavy-duty affair in very hot, humid conditions ripe for tempers to flare. Sumrall said Saturday they would treat this like a Tuesday and Wednesday practice before a Saturday game, mimicking what they will face in the short week before the Thursday night Halloween game at Charlotte. Other than the fights, which were out of the ordinary and likely will not be repeated, there were two big storylines. The first one was the continuation of the camp-long surge by Dontae Fleming, who topped himself today. I've been a little circumspect about him because he's a prove-it-in-games guy to me, but god Almighty, he has looked fantastic in practice. He ran under a deep ball down the sideline from Darian Mensah in 11 on 11 as if he were a seasoned pro, making the long touchdown catch look easy. A little later, though, he turned in the best catch I've seen since I started covering Tulane practices in the middle of the 2010 season. With cornerback Rayshawn Pleasant draped all over him on another deep pass from Mensah, he pulled it in with his left hand while straddling the sideline to keep his feet inbounds. The celebratory screaming from his offensive teammates reached a crescendo at that point, but he was not done, scoring on another pass from Mensah on the the next play as about 30 players ran over to congratulate him in the back of the end zone. I liked Fleming in the preseason last fall and predicted some good things from him before he had a very quiet year (six catches), but he was nothing like this. He absolutely, positively has been the best receiver on the roster nearly every day.

"He's been very productive and very consistent all throughout training camp," Sumrall said. "Just reliable, dependable, very steady, and to be that way and go make those big-time plays, he is playing at a really high level. He transferred here, didn't maybe have the year he wanted to last year, has been through some adversity. He has real-life stuff he's taken on. He's a father, and he's a mature guy and the most consistent, hard-working guy on our team probably. You get what you earn, and he's earned it right now with how he's performing. He's worked extremely hard and I'm proud to see the results he's getting. I think he's going to have a big year. I really do."

The other storyline is the ascension of Mensah to make it a legitimate three-quarterback competitions. The consensus among observers after Saturday's scrimmage was that Kai Horton had played considerably better than Ty Thompson, but my take was different--Horton won by default, playing OK at best while Thompson struggled, and that's not enough to impress me. Mensah was sharp when he came in with the backups at the latter end of the scrimmage, and Sumrall felt he earned the right to join the competition for real. Mensah spent a lot of time with the first team today, although Horton and Thompson were the first guys in the only totally live drill--some goal-line work at the beginning of 11-on-11. Mensah likely will get a third of the snaps with the first team in Thursday night's scrimmage, giving him a shot to show what he can do on an equal footing with Horton and Thompson.

Neither Horton nor Thompson did enough in the first two weeks of camp to keep the coaches from wanting to get another good look at Mensah.

"There are different days where I feel differently," Sumrall said. "Darian Mensah went with the 1s today for a reason. He had a really good scrimmage. I'm not saying he's going to start. We're still in training camp mode. We're still working things out, flushing things out. You're seeing different guys go with the 1s at other spots, too, that maybe aren't 1s, but the quarterback position gets highlighted because we don't have an incumbent starter. All three guys have done some good things. There have been times where I'm like, hey, it's a two-man race. I gave reps to No. 10 with the 1s today because if you watched Saturday's scrimmage, he deserved them. My job is to do what's best for the team, and right now he earned the opportunity to go take some reps with the 1s. He didn't take the first reps with the 1s in the goal-line period. That was the other two guys, but he's earned enough to get thrown in that mix."

Sumrall even changed the parameters around the defense going after Mensah today.

"We made him 'thud,' he said. "He hadn't played a live college snap, so he was thud today. He wasn't tag or the halo rule where you need to stay away from the quarterback. I told the guys on defense put your hands on him. I want him to feel you if you're back there, so I like where we're at. Do I wish there was a clear-cut guy that might make my job a little easier? We're having to work a little bit through it more, but Kai's done some really good things. Ty's done some good things, and Darian Mensah, he just seems to have that it factor a little bit right now. I'll be honest with you, he's got a little something about him, and by no way does that mean he's the guy right now, but I want to put him in those situations to see what we got, and now is the time to do it. Through this Thursday we are going to put all of them in situations to find out who they are and what they do under pressure, and then after Thursday we'll have to start narrowing down our scope, but we're still in training camp mode through Thursday and I want to put him out there. You'll see him go with the 1s some the rest of the week, and the other two guys will, too. It's not a one-man show."

I have never really bought Mensah as being in the quarterback competition, and he clearly was No. 3 entering Saturday's scrimmage, but this is not lip service or an attempt to keep him happy by Sumrall. The guy who performs the best in the next week or so will get an upper hand. I'm on the fence as to how it will turn out, with Horton maybe having the slight edge after I thought Thompson had the edge entering camp. Both of them need to play better than they have or Mensah will get a real shot.

"It wasn't an intended wake-up call (putting Mensah in with the 1s)," Sumrall said. "You get what you earn. We're going to play who prepares and who the guys rally around. Yeah, the way he's performing might be a wake-up call to those guys, this is another guy in the room. That room's great, though. They pull for him. They are not pulling against him, and if they are pulling against him, they are going to have to come deal with me. I think everything's a wake-up call. If you don't do things with a sense of urgency, you've got a problem in this game. I hope that those guys recognize there's a youngster pushing their heels. I don't care if he's a redshirt freshman that hasn't played a game. I will start him if he earns it. He hasn't earned it clearcut yet, but he's in the mix. He's doing a good job."

Gerrod Henderson, who had two "sacks" in the scrimmage, including a definite strip of Thompson, practiced with the 1s at defensive end, today. To Sumrall, he's probably been the biggest surprise of camp. Henderson plays the same spot as Adin Huntington, whom Sumrall loves and will be the first-team guy when he returns from a minor knee injury next week, but it is a position with a clear opportunity for playing time.

"He (Henderson)'s a guy that full disclosure, when I got here in January the report was not outstanding. It wasn't fatal, but it was like, hey, he hasn't really done a whole lot and he's been inconsistent off the field with how he's conducted himself. He's been really good. He's flashed, he's produced, he's twitchy, he's violent, he plays with some explosiveness, he's got good effort and good energy. It's been really fun to watch him grow. To be fully transparent, I didn't know what his opportunity to have an impact on this team was going to look like back in the winter, and he just kind of showed up every day and stacked some good things on top of each other, and now we have a shot to see him have a role on this defense. I'm really proud of what he's done."

Leftover interviews from last week

Alex Bauman talked last Tuesday and Josh Remetich talked last Wednesday and I never posted what they said. Now I have posted every post-practice interview from Sumrall and his players through practice 11 with the exception of the two days I missed due to COVID plus one Vincent Murphy interview that duplicated a lot of the stuff I got from him at AAC Media Day.

ALEX BAUMAN

On new offense fitting him:

“No doubt. Coach Craddock comes from a tight end background. He told us when he got here he loves using the tight ends, but we have to prove to him that we can show up and make those plays in the run game and the pass game. He gives us opportunities, and when we get those plays called we have to go out and execute.”

On leaving portal:

“It was an easy decision. My heart is here at Tulane. I entered the portal. It might have been a mistake. Who knows, but my heart is in New Orleans, and once coach Sumrall and all the coaches got here, they convinced me like that. It was good.”

On strength training:

“In the spring I was out dealing with a bit of a surgery, but credit to coach Rusty Whitt and the strength staff that they brought in. His regiment is a little different than coach Hester, and I wouldn’t say it benefited me more, but it was a different way of working out and getting stronger and I think that helped me overall because I needed to build up my lower half a little bit more and get a little bit stronger. Coach Whitt and the strength staff really helped me with that.”

More on difference between Kurt Hester and Whitt:

“Hester was really unique. He focused a lot on speed. That was his thin—just speed, speed, speed. Coach Whitt, he focused on both speed and power and getting bigger and looking bigger. Combining those things really helped us out as a team.”

On comfort factor:

“I feel great right now. That’s a credit to the coaches like I said. They’ve been helping us each and every day. They’re believing in us, and that’s also going over the playbook and going over the schemes and stuff. It’s a lot more system based than memorization, and everything kind of works together. It’s a lot easier to work different plays or learn different things in the system.”

On eager for season to start:

“I’m ready to go right now. Obviously we’ve got fall camp. We have to get going, but the season can’t come quick enough. We’re ready to get out there.”

On how big a season he can have:

“That’s all based on the offense. I have to do my part. I set individual goals, but maybe down the road I can look back and say, oh, we won, not I had this many catches or this many touchdowns. It’s more about the team. The Cotton Bowl catch was a big thing to everybody and a big thing to me, but maybe even more down the road I can look back and soak it in a little bit more, but right now I’m focused on the team and winning and stuff like that.”

JOSH REMETICH

On transition to Sumrall and his staff:

“The program that coach Sumrall brought in is completely different. It’s really more about he has these meetings and core values that he wants us to have as a team, and they are very strong and we have meetings about them every off day during fall camp and really doing those and having us tell our stories to each of our teammates really brings us together, and we’re a lot closer because of that than at any time in the last six year. This is the most fun year I’ve had here so far.”

On differences in practice:

“Good on good reps. It’s really fun to go back and forth with your teammates throughout the day and throughout the practice and the energy that the younger staff brings. They are very ecstatic, and it’s fun.”

On being stabilizing piece with a bunch of new players on roster:

“We brought in a lot of talented guys. A lot of guys have experience playing in those positions. I saw one stat on twitter that we had the 10th most snaps across the offensive line in college football. That’s really impressive that we were able to bring in two starters that have a lot of experience and a lot of exposure in big games.”

On him stepping up:

“Whenever we first got here, when it all got set and done in the spring, the first thing we did in the summer was we all went out to eat with each other right before fall camp. It’s kind of just building that relationship through summer workouts and getting to know the guys and the expectations that they’ve brought in. Vinnie Murphy doesn’t say this about himself, but he’s a very demanding guy and it’s kind of wearing off on the offensive line. It’s holding us to a standard and it’s really good for us.”

On backfield:

“The backfield has been amazing to watch during fall camp. The freshman Amauri and Arnold Barnes from here, they’ve all been really explosive and really fun to watch. Shaadie and Makhi were a great duo last year. Makhi’s very explosive and will run right through you. Shaadie’s shifty, he’s good. I expect to see them run the ball up and down the field this fall.”

On Clayton-Johnson:

“When he first got here he was kind of getting told to come along, and now he’s doing it. He’s doing what he talked about. Me and him have sat and talked for hours before, and seeing him put his words into actions is really cool to see. I know he loves coach Rock and I love coach Rock. He recruited me to Southern Miss when he was there.”

On loving how coaching change works out:

“The way that coach Sumrall came in, I was very happy to see. He was recruiting me while he was at Kentucky and I was in high school, so I had a previous relationship with him and now we’re able to get together and build on that relationship. I’ve had seven offensive line coaches since I’ve been here, so a little coaching change is not going to hurt.”

Scrimmage report: Saturday, Aug. 10

It was not a banner day for either Kai Horton or Ty Thompson on Saturday morning in Tulane's first preseason scrimmage. Although Horton was the better of the two, both of them will need to play better and get more help from the receivers and blockers around them for the Green Wave to get where it wants to go--an AAC championship and potential spot in the college football playoff. Thompson's biggest issue has been ball security, and it was a problem again today, which was the separator between the quarterbacks. He'll get another chance on Thursday night, and probably with the starting offensive line intact unlike today, when center Vincent Murphy and left tackle Rashad Green remained out with injuries.

The day started with 10 field goal attempts, and left-footed Jacob Barnes, who has proven numbers over four years at Louisiana Tech, was shaky. With Bryce Busch as his holder He hit a 21-yarder from the middle and a 35-yarder from the left hash before missing wide left from 39 yards on the right hash and wide right from 48 yards. The ball does not come off his foot with much power, so accuracy has to be his calling card. Next up was walk-on freshman Patrick Durkin, who hit a 21-yarder, a 31-yarder and a 48-yarder with ease. He booms the ball but has zero experience in college. Third was walk-on freshman Ethan Head, who hit a 21-yarder and a 31-yarder before sending a 48-yarder wide right. He, too, has a tremendous leg but no experience. The job is Barnes' to lose, which he might do if he kicks like he did this morning, but it might have been just a bad day or issues with the hold as the Wave gets used to a left-footed kicker. Will Karoll held for the right-footed kickers.

They went to punts next, and although Karoll has not proven to be a world-beater, he needs to stay healthy. HIs first punt, from the back of the end zone, went 42 yards to Dontae Fleming, who is the frontrunner to be the primary punt returner. Busch was next and sent a low 35-yarder that would have been trouble in a game. Karoll's next attempt, with the line of scrimmage at the offense's 35,went 40 yards. Busch then sent a low one about 30 yards that landed near the sideline. Karoll's third and final attempt, a pooch effort from the defense's 45, went 29 yards to the 16, where Fleming caught it. Busch's last effort from the same spot was almost perfect and could have been downed at the 1, but the guy trying to down it stepped across the goal line while trying to save it, so it was a touchback.

They had individual drills before the scrimmage began, and Mario Williams was the only wideout to drop a routine pass. He looked like the best player on the team for the first few days of spring drills but was quiet the rest of the way. The party line was they did need to see what he could do, but he has not looked particularly good in the first two weeks of preseason camp, beginning with minor cramping issues. I'm still waiting him for him to be a daily playmaker. Maybe they are holding him back to let others shine, but he did not have a very good year at USC last season, so I'm not totally convinced.

Adin Huntington, Phat Watts, Guiseann Mirtil (who suffered a serious injury at the beginning of spring drills), Blake Gunter and Patrick Jenkins ( cautionary, already proven) sat out along with the two offensive linemen, but Josh Remetich returned and was on the first unit when it took the field. Horton was accompanied by running back Makhi Hughes, wideouts Williams, Yulkeith Brown and Shaun Nicholas (a surprise to me), tight end Alex Bauman, and from left to right on the line, Derrick Graham, Shadre Hurst, Caleb Thomas, Remetich and Darion Reed.

Kam Hamilton replaced Jenkins on the first-team defense, with Eric Hicks at the nose, Terrell Allen at rush end and Gerrod Henderson at end (Angelo Anderson got some reps with that unit, too). The linebackers were Tyler Grubbs and Sam Howard. The nickel was Caleb Ransaw. The corners were Rayshawn Pleasant and Jaheim Johnson (another surprise). The safeties were Jalen Geiger and Bailey Despanie, with Jack Tchienchou getting reps in place of Geiger at times.

Here was the opening series:

1-10-25: Incomplete pass for Nicholas in triple coverage. Williams appeared open in the flat but Horton looked downfield. He said there were two missed assignments on the play afterward.
2-10-25: Hughes +4
3-6-29: Complete to Hughes, who was wide open for 14. yards out of the backfield.
1-10-43: Hughes middle +2
2-8-45: Complete to Nicholas +5
3-3-50: incomplete with heavy pressure off the edge from Anderson messing up the play.

Tulane had another 90-minute practice this morning, and this one focused on the two-minute drills. While the offensive and defensive linemen practiced on the auxiliary field, Kai Horton and Ty Thompson each conducted a 7-on-7 drive, with Horton operating with the first team offense against the first-team defense and Thompson going with the 2s against the 2s and the offense just needing a field goal to win. Then they reversed it in 11-on-11 work and Thompson went with the 1s while Horton was with the 2s and they needed a touchdown to win.

Horton began his drive with a pass that Yulkeith Brown dropped. He then had a completion to Bryce Bohanon on the sideline for a first-down gain that stopped the clock. After throwing the ball away when no one was open, he missed Mario Williams in the middle of the field when Williams was well covered on a throw that almost caused a major collision. With the defense playing to prevent the offense from getting a field goal, Horton surprised them with a deep pass down the sideline with little arc to Dontae Fleming. When he released it, I thought it was going to sail over Fleming's head, but Fleming ran under it easily for a pretty touchdown.

The defense on that series had Johnathan Edwards and Rayshawn Pleasant at cornerback, Micah Robinson as an extra corner in the role of a safety, Bailey Despanie and I believe Jack Tchienchou (with a number change) at regular safety, Kaleb Ransaw and then No. 17 (not listed on the roster but probably Jayden Lewis) at nickelback and Chris Rodgers and then Dickson Agu at linebacker.

The offensive line was still missing Vincent Murphy, Josh Remetich and Rashad Green, although Remetich was in uniform and likely participated in work on the auxiliary field.

Ty Thompson's series started with a completion to Zycarl Lewis inbounds for a short gain, forcing the offense to call a timeout. Thompson then hit Sidney Mbanasor for what would have been a decen gain, but he dropped the ball. A pass to Khai Prean was broken up, but Prean caught a short pass for a first down on fourth down to keep the drive alive while the offense used another timeout. Thopson then threw slightly behind Reggie Brown near the sideline, and he could not hold on to the ball. The next play was a throwaway when no one was open, leading to another third down that was converted on a completion Garrett Mmahat, who got out of bounds with 15 seconds left. Mmahat was open on the next play on the exact same route that Fleming scored on, but he was not fast enough to catch a throw that was on the same trajectory and went over his head and into the end zone. With little time left, Thompson threw a frozen rope to on the inside to Lewis, who caught it falling down at the 6 for a big gain. Out of timeouts, the offense raced up to down the ball before the clock ran out, and Bobby Noel kicked a field goal (the regular kickers were not involved in this drill).

For the 11-on-11 2-minute work, which started at the offense's 25, the defensive line on Thompson's possession was Michael Lunz at rush end, Kam Hamilton at tackle, Eric Hicks at nose tackle and Gerrod Henderson at end. The linebackers were Rodgers and Agu, with Ransaw at nickel,, Despanie and Tchienchou (I believe) at safety and Edwards and Pleasant at cornerback. Thompson started by hitting Mario Williams for a frist down over the middle. He then missed Williams deep in traffic, underthrew Fleming deep when he was not open and hit Alex Bauman for a first down on the sideline. He tried to hit Mbanasor deep, but Edwards broke it up. Yulkeith Brown then dropped another short pass--this was uncharacteristic of him in camp--and Hamilton tipped a pass at the line before Jon Sumrall whistled the series over.

Horton began with a short completion to Mmahat that forced the offense to call a timeout. A running play went nowhere (but since they were only in spider pads, it seemed like a waste anyway) and Horton throw wide of Bohanon on the sideline. That was it. The whistle blew and practice was over at 9:35. The defensive line for that series was Geordan Guidry, Deshaun Batiste and a number that did not align with the listed roster, with Terrell Allen off the edge. The nickelback was Tillery, with Grubbs and Howard at linebacker, Jaheim Johnson and Micah Robinson at cornerback and Geiger and Adams at safety.

"It was good," Sumrall said. "Two different situations. In the 7-on-7 we needed a field goal to win the game. In the 11-on-11 we needed a touchdown. Tomorrow we'll work a different situation. We'll work an end-to-first-half two-minute where we'll just take points. Obviously we'd like touchdown, but we're really into refining a lot of situational things. In 11-on-11, the pass rush showed up a little bit. The offense won both the 7-on-7 and the defense won both 11-on-11 and you added the rush. That changes the dynamic. It's a whole hell of a lot easier to play quarterback in 7 on 7. When the rush gets real and in your face, it gets a lot harder."

I still don't see much or any separation between the quarterbacks. Horton, who has underrated arm talent, looked slightly better than Thompson today, but tomorrow's scrimmage will be telling even though neither quarterback will go long. I have a feeling this will not be settled until the opener against Southeastern, and it appears increasingly likely, though not certain, that both will play in that game.

I've been hesitant to write it because I wrote it after a scrimmage last year, but Fleming has been the best receiver in camp. HIs teammates say he has been much more focused than in the past. There is absolutely no reason he can't be a huge factor this year, but he has to prove it in games. His first reception against South Alabama last year, when he got called for an offensive facemask, set the tone for an unfocused, nothing year.

The scrimmage, which is not open to the public, will start at 9 tomorrow and go to about 11, so it should be a hot one. Here is Sumrall on the format:

"I'd say it will be north of 50 plays and less than 80. Some of that's going to depend on how the drives go. We're going to open that up with a field goal period and a punt period and we're going to go to the ball on the minus-25 after a touchback on a kickoff. We'll play 8 to 10 plays with the ones, 8 to 10 plays with the 2s. Whether we get in the red zone or not, we'll create red zone if we don't. We'll also hit one block of plays coming out from the minus-2 or minus-1, and like I said, we'll also hit an end-of-half two-minute. Then a break there. We'l also do kickoff cover period and then at that point you'll see everybody at some point get some live scrimmage snaps, but before the kickoff cover period is when you'll see us be refined on trying to work some situational things with the main guys.
