The 2025 USA national championships kicked off Monday with opening ceremonies as teams compete for a possible spot at the Olympic trials in the fall.
There are eight men’s teams and eight women’s teams competing at the DECC through Friday in a round-robin format before the National Finals on Sunday.
These men and women all have different stories, but share one thing in common - the love of curling.
“It’s just an honor and a privilege to be asked to throw the ceremonial rock today because I have watched hundreds of ceremonies and never thought I would actually participate in one,” said curling vet Joanne Docteur.
“Honestly, even if it’s a male-dominated sport it doesn’t mean that girls can’t do it and there’s a lot of really cool girls that can curl,” said 12-year-old rookie curler Audrey McParlan.
“There will be people watching during the week,” she said. “You can go and watch and ask people because the curling community can be so helpful.”
Since there will be 16 of the best teams in the nation at the DECC, Daly said it’s a good time to get into the sport. have
“You have Olympic goal medalist in Team Schuster,” she said. “You have other Olympians playing. You’re watching the best curling, so you can’t get any better than this week.”
As for Plys, he wants people to be able to support the sport while having fun.
“We don’t want it to be a stuffy atmosphere where people are sitting in silence,” he said. “Go there, have, a couple drinks, have a hot dog and have fun.”
